Planetary science is the study of planets, moons, irregular bodies such as asteroids and the processes that create and modify them. Like terrestrial sciences, planetary science research is heavily dependent on collecting, processing and archiving large quantities of spatial data to support a range of activities. To address the complexity of storing, discovering, accessing, and utilizing spatial data, the terrestrial research community has developed conceptual Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) models ...

Abstract In 1889 Reinitzer,1 working with cholesteryl benzoate, discovered a state of matter that was later ter med cholesteric liquid crystals. It is doubtful whether the discovery of liquied crystals would have been made at that time if the optical properties of the cholesteric phase were less pronounced. Like other liquid crystals, matericals in this state act as birefringent fluids. however, at that point the resemblance endns. The optical properties may be summarized as follows:2

Abstract The cholesteric phase represents a unique situation in nature in that a highly colored material does not absorb incident radiation but transmits and scatters light selectively. The colors are not dependent upon specific electronic arrangements in the molecules as in the morke familiar dyes but, instead, are dependent on such factors as shape (steric factors) and dipole arragment. Thus, materials which exhibit cholesteric phases may be affected by a difference in carbon chain length or by ...

Abstract Bis-(4′-n-alkoxybenzal)-2-chloro-1, 4-phenylenediamines and bis- (4′-n-alkoxybenzal)-2-methyl-1, 4-phenylenediamines with different alkoxy groups have been synthesized. Similar compounds with fluoro, bromo and chloro groups replacing the alkoxy groups have also been prepared. All the compounds show a nematic liquid phase. An additional lower temperature liquid crystalline phase is observed with chloro-substituted compounds for n-alkoxy chain lengths of C8 and longer and with the methyl substituted ...

Measurement of the tilt angle of the smectic $C$ phase of terephthal-bis-($4\ensuremath{-}n\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{b}\mathrm{u}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{y}\mathrm{l}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{n}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{l}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{n}\mathrm{e}$) has been made using conoscopic observation and circularly polarized light. The new phenomenon of a smectic $C$ phase with a temperature-dependent tilt angle is reported. Convergent light observations have been made on three liquid crystalline substances with nematic and smectic phases. The nematic phase was observed to be uniaxial as expected, but smectic $C$ was found to be biaxial. The optic axial angle $2V$ for smectic $C$ was found to be on the order of 20\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} for all three compounds. Also, the tilt angle for smectic $C$ is nearly 45\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} for all three liquid-crystal systems. Anisotropy of the degrees ...

The cholesteric phase is associated with scattering effects that give rise to iridescent colors, the dominant wavelength being influenced by very small changes in temperature, which can be as large as 1000 A shift per degree. This unusually high temperature sensitivity has given rise to the use of the cholesteric phase as a sensitive thermometer and thermal mapping media. This paper reviews the optical effects in the cholesteric phase with some new additions that are particularly relevant to thermal ...

Abstract Most lipids do not pass, on heating, directly from a crystalline structure to an isotropic structure. They are often characterized by a number of intermediate phases, ranging from the plastic crystal, where the center of gravity of the molecule may rotate about one or more axes while the three‐dimensional order of the crystal remains, to nematic liquid crystals, which have birefrigent properties of crystals and yet are characterized by completely random ordering of the molecular centers. ...

The fluorine and proton spin resonances in the nematic–liquid–crystal state of terephthalbis (amino-fluorobenzene) are studied using the method of moments. The second moment of the proton line has a large dependence on the molecular configuration as well as on the degree of molecular order. The fluorine second moment, on the other hand, has a negligible dependence on the configuration and is used to obtain a measure of the order. With the degree of order known, the second moment of the proton resonance ...

Abstract A thermal imaging system using cholesteric liquid crystals has been designed and built which utilizes the extreme temperature sensitivity of cholesteryl oleyl carbonate. Theoretical considerations for the design and the operating conditions of the device are given. The experimental results indicate that the limitations on such a device are primarily due to the finite film thickness required for scattering by the cholesteric liquid (on the order of ten micrometers). This system was able to ...

The effects of ultrasound on the optical properties of an aligned layer of nematic liquid crystal are described. It was observed that the birefringence of a normally oriented nematic liquid crystal was a function of the acoustic energy, and that with sufficient incident acoustic energy, a scattering phenomenon similar to dynamic scattering occurred.

Liquid crystal (L.C.) thermographic study of 105 women with abnormal breast characteristics was undertaken to evaluate the efficiency of L.C. thermography in breast cancer detection. Six general thermographic signs were noted to occur in breasts affected by breast cancer. These signs were derived from L.C. thermograms of 17 patients with histologically proven carcinoma. Detection of palpable malignancies with L.C. thermography had a true-positive rate of 82.3%. The false-positive rate was 13.6%, ...

We report on the correlation between features of the molecular structure of polyphenyls and the measured parameters of optical limiting: limiting threshold and clamped output. Optical limiting in these materials is mainly due to a strong light scattering (third order negative nonlinear effect). We show that in many simple cases the limiting threshold decreases with increased conjugation length, linearity, planarity and with the substitution of acceptor/donor end groups. The UV spectra and the wavelength ...

A novel stereoscopic/3D desktop monitor has been developed that combines the output of two active matrix LCDs (AMLCDs) into a stereo image through use of a unique beamsplitter design. This approach, called the StereoMirror, creates a stereo/3D monitor that retains the full resolution, response time and chromaticity of the component displays. The resultant flicker-free image, when viewed with passive polarizing glasses, provides an unprecedented level of viewing comfort in stereo. The monitor also ...

A liquid crystal thermographic technic was developed and tested for placental location. The procedure was rapid, inexpensive, and noninvasive. Sixty-four women were examined during the late stages of pregnancy for placental location. Implantation sites for 46 women were observed at delivery and 39 were correctly identified by thermography for an overall accuracy of 85%. Placental location accuracy varied significantly with the implantation site. Thermographic location of anterior, frontal and lateral ...

We report the characteristics of a strong 3 rd order negative nonlinear effect in the nematic and smectic A liquid crystal phases as well as in the isotropic phase. Limiting is achieved as a result of a strong light scattering effect with some contribution from nonlinear absorption. We present data regarding the dependence of these parameters on polarization direction, liquid crystalline order and ...
