This paper is concerned with the parameters influencing the interfacial electron transfer kinetics, and therefore the sensitizing efficiency, for different sensitizer dyes adsorbed to nanocrystalline titanium dioxide films. We consider three sensitizer dyes: Ru(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate)2-cis-(NCS)2 (Ru(dcbpy)2(NCS)2) and zinc and free base tetracarboxyphenyl porphyrins (ZnTCPP & H2TCPP). These dyes were selected as they exhibit large differences in their oxidation potentials and photophysics, ...

Although a great variety of pediatric tests of visual acuity exist, few have been compared directly within the same patients or have been evaluated directly against an adult gold standard.Right eyes from 80 3- to 5-year-old preschoolers were tested at 3 m with the two current pediatric optotype tests-the Patti Pics and the Lea Symbols (Mass VAT versions)-that best adhere to the international standard for early eye and vision screening. For comparison, right eyes from 52 adults were tested under the ...

James W. Mercer,

The present memoir is the outcome of an attempt to obtain the conditions under which a given symmetric and continuous function k ( s, t ) is definite, in the sense of Hilbert. At an early stage, however, it was found that the class of definite functions was too restricted to allow the determination of necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the determinants of § 10. The discovery that this could be done for functions of positive or negative type, and the fact that almost all the theorems which ...

James W. Mercer,

This memoir is concerned with continuous symmetric functions k ( s, t ) for which the double integral ∫ a b ∫ a b k ( s, t ) θ ( s ) θ ( t ) dsdt is either not negative, or not positive, for each function θ( s ) which is continuous in the interval ( a, b ) ; in the former case the function k ( s, t ) is said to be of positive type, while in the latter it is said to be of negative type. The importance of these classes of functions in the theory of integral equations will be gathered from Part I. The greater portion of the second ...

Crystals of the title compound are monoclinic, a= 8.939(3), b= 18.045(7), c= 11.363(3)Å, β= 91.52(2)°, Z= 4, space group P21/n. The structure was determined by Patterson and Fourier syntheses and refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures to a final R of 0.041 for 2 720 independent reflections measured by diffractometer. The co-ordination geometry about the ruthenium atom is essentially octahedral with cis-chlorine atoms. Of the four dimethyl sulphoxide ligands three are S- and one is O-bonded, ...

Although the problem of minority overrepresentation in special education programs for the mildly handicapped has been widely recognized and documented, the factors responsible for such an overrepresentation remain the source of much controversy. The most popular explanation continues to be the presence of systematic bias in the assessment process, particularly with regard to intelligence testing. Unfortunately, attempts at isolating and controlling specific facets of this bias have been largely ...

This study provides a quantitative description of the small airways and alveolar duct-alveolar architecture of the rat lung. To accomplish this, quantitative three-dimensional reconstructions were made of small airways, the alveolar duct system, and alveoli. The branching pattern of the small airways immediately proximal to the alveolar ducts varied significantly. For example, the number of bronchiole-alveolar duct junctions per parent bronchus (terminal bronchiole) ranged from two to six. The number ...

A UK survey of di-(2-ethylhexyl)adipate (DEHA) levels in retail foods (83 samples) wrapped in plasticized PVC film has been carried out, examining a wide range of different food types obtained from retail and take-away outlets. Foodstuffs analysed included fresh meat and poultry, ready-cooked poultry, cheese, fruit, vegetables and baked goods such as cakes, bread rolls and sandwiches. Analysis by stable isotope dilution GC/MS showed DEHA levels ranging from 1.0 to 72.8 mg/kg in uncooked meat and poultry, ...

Abstract The distribution of brush cells in the rat lung was studied using electron microscopic morphometry. Samples were taken from six distinctive anatomical regions. Tissue from the trachea, lobar bronchi, terminal bronchioles, first alveolar duct bifurcations, proximal alveolar regions, and the distal alveolar region were isolated and embedded in Epox 812. Aside from the trachea and the lobar bronchi, the other four regions were isolated from embedded tissue using microdis‐section techniques. ...

Summary A series of compounds that apparently disrupt hormonally regulated processes in insects have been examined for effects on the viability and microfilarial production of adult Brugia pahangi cultured in vitro . The azasteroids, 25-azacoprostane and 25-azacholestane, inhibited the production of microfilariae at 5 ppm, the former also exhibiting macrofilaricidal activity at this concentration. The brassinosteroids examined inhibited microfilarial production at 5 ppm but did not affect worm viability. ...

A wide range of different food-types packaged in vinylidene chloride copolymers (PVDC), nitrocellulose-coated regenerated cellulose film (RCF) and cellulose acetate were purchased from retail and 'take-away' outlets. Pluripotent mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) derived from the early blastocyst can differentiate in vitro into a variety of somatic cell types including lineages from all three embryonic germ layers. Protocols for ES cell neural differentiation typically involve induction by retinoic acid (RA), or by exposure to growth factors or medium conditioned by other cell types. A serum-free differentiation (SFD) medium completely lacking exogenous retinoids was devised that allows for efficient conversion ...
