The cytoskeletal components, macrophage actin-binding protein and filamin, were dried from glycerol and examined by low-angle rotary shadowing electron microscopy. Both are elongate, flexible molecules whose general morphologi is similar to that of erythrocyte spectrin. Neither actin-binding protein nor filamin binds to spectrin-depleted erythrocyte membranes.

Residential solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have been emerging as an economically feasible energy source. In the United States, an extension of the federal solar investment tax credit was granted in December 2015 to encourage solar investments by giving residential users a 30% discount on start-up costs (equipment and installation costs) with the 30% discount decreasing slightly each year until it expires in 2023. This article presents a simulation of the return on investment of a residential solar ...

Candidates raise substantial sums of money to compete in federal elections. Scholars and election observers are concerned by potential corruption related to the reliance on donors who make significant contributions. One reform effort to counterbalance large donors is encouraging small donor participation. Still, some worry that ideologically extreme candidates are best able to raise small donations. We analyze internal U.S. Federal Elections Commission data to examine small donor giving in the 2006 ...

Return on investment (ROI) analyses of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems used for residential usage have typically shown that at least 10 to 12 years is needed to break even, with this amount varying based on tax credits and reliability. This paper discusses the challenges with the reliability of current solar photovoltaic systems and the key reliability bottlenecks, with a focus on the ROI. The problem stems primarily from reliability issues of currently available power electronics hardware. This paper' ...

To assist with public health preparedness activities, we estimated the number of expected cases of Zika virus in Puerto Rico and associated healthcare needs. Estimated annual incidence is 3.2-5.1 times the baseline, and long-term care needs are predicted to be 3-5 times greater than in years with no Zika virus.

Major burn represents a multi-system insult to the human body. Despite improvements in mortality and morbidity, reliable predictors of outcome are lacking. Raised levels of cell-free nucleic acids have been detected in various pathological processes including burns. We quantified circulating nucleic acids as potential objective measures of burn severity with predictive and prognostic value. Expression of endothelial specific cell-free mRNA and cell-free DNA were measured in plasma of 19 burn patients ...

Nearly 20% of U.S. Americans report a hearing loss, yet our current health care system is poorly designed and equipped to effectively care for these individuals. Individuals with hearing loss report communication breakdowns, inaccessible health information, reduced awareness and training by health care providers, and decreased satisfaction while struggling with inadequate health literacy. These all contribute to health inequities and increased health care expenditures and inefficiencies. It is time ...
