This study investigates the influence of hybrid toughening—via core-shell rubber (CSR) particles and non-woven thermoplastic veils—on the delamination resistance, crack migration and R-curve behaviour in carbon fibre/epoxy laminates under mode-I and mode-II conditions. Core-shell rubber particles, varying in size from 100 nm to 3 μm, with 0–10 wt% content, are dispersed within the epoxy resin, and thermoplastic micro-fibre veils with polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fibres, with 5–20 g/m2 areal weight, ...

Solid-binding peptides (SBPs) recognizing inorganic and synthetic interfaces have enabled a broad range of materials science applications and hold promise as adhesive or morphogenetic control units that can be genetically encoded within desirable or designed protein frameworks. To date, the underlying relationships governing both SBP–surface and SBP–SBP interactions and how they give rise to different adsorption mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we combine protein engineering, surface plasmon resonance ...

Smooth pursuit eye tracking deficits are a promising intermediate phenotype for schizophrenia and possibly for psychotic disorders more broadly. The Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes (B-SNIP) consortium investigated the severity and familiality of different pursuit parameters across psychotic disorders. Probands with schizophrenia (N = 265), schizoaffective disorder (N = 178), psychotic bipolar disorder (N = 231), their first-degree relatives (N = 306, N = 217, N = 273, respectively) and healthy ...

Abstract Understanding the partitioning of snow and rain contributing to either catchment streamflow or evapotranspiration (ET) is of critical relevance for water management in response to climate change. To investigate this partitioning, we use endmember splitting and mixing analyses based on stable isotope ( 18 O) data from nine headwater catchments in the East River, Colorado. Our results show that one third of the snow partitions to ET and 13% of the snowmelt sustains summer streamflow. Only 8% ...

The recent development of artificial intelligence–guided quantitative coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) analysis (AI-QCT) has enabled rapid analysis of atherosclerotic plaque burden and characteristics. This study set out to investigate the 10-year prognostic value of atherosclerotic burden derived from AI-QCT and to compare the spectrum of plaque to manually assessed CCTA, coronary artery calcium scoring (CACS), and clinical risk characteristics. This was a long-term follow-up study ...

Abstract The influence of hepatic disease on the pharmacokinetics of the new ACE inhibitor, benazepril hydrochloride, was evaluated in 12 male patients suffering from liver cirrhosis. The patients received a single oral 20 mg dose. The plasma concentrations and urinary excretion of unchanged benazepril and its active metabolite benazeprilat were determined. Compared with a historical control group of healthy volunteers treated with the same benazepril. HCl dose, the plasma concentrations of benazepril ...

Can the well-known experimental phenomenon of present-bias in intertemporal choice be confounded with the risks associated with receiving payment? Can measurements of risk preferences be used to represent desires for smoothness in intertemporal payments? In our two 2012 papers in this journal we explored these two questions and found the answer to the first to be yes and the second to be no. We feel the three papers inspired by our work and published here underscore these arguments and point to ...

Risk and time are intertwined. The present is known while the future is inherently risky. This is problematic when studying time preferences since uncontrolled risk can generate apparently present-biased behavior. We systematically manipulate risk in an intertemporal choice experiment. Discounted expected utility performs well with risk, but when certainty is added common ratio predictions fail sharply. The data cannot be explained by prospect theory, hyperbolic discounting, or preferences for resolution ...

Experimentally elicited discount rates are frequently higher than what seems reasonable for economic decision-making. Such high rates are often attributed to present-biased discounting. A well-known bias of standard measurements is the assumption of linear consumption utility. Attempting to correct this bias using measures of risk aversion to identify concavity, researchers find reasonable discounting but at the cost of exceptionally high utility function curvature. We present a new methodology ...

High-throughput screening provides one of the most common ways of finding hit compounds. Lead-like libraries, in particular, provide hits with compatible functional groups and vectors for structural elaboration and physical properties suitable for optimization. Library synthesis approaches can lead to a lack of chemical diversity because they employ parallel derivatization of common building blocks using single reaction types. We address this problem through a "build-couple-transform" paradigm for ...

Abstract Scintillating plastic fibres find an increasing number of applications in different fields ranging from elementary particle detection to radiobiology. One of the yet open questions is the long time stability of these fibres. For this sake, experiments have been performed under 2 MeV electron and under 70 MeV proton irradiation, in a way so that the counteracting effects of radiation-induced degradation and thermal defect annealing at room temperature are well separated in time scale. Thus, ...
