The altromycins are novel anthraquinone-derived antibiotics related to the pluramycins. They are produced by an actinomycete, AB 1246E-26, which was isolated from a South African bushveld soil. The altromycins have Gram-positive antibacterial activity with MICs of 0.2 to 3.12 μg/ml against Streptococci and Staphylococci.

Two hundred and eighty-four cases of multiple repeat cesarean sections are presented in this 15 year report. These patients had a total of 1,033 sections, between three and nine apiece. Low cervical operations were done in the great majority of cases No deliberate sterilizations were performed, but four cesarean hysterectomies were performed because of severe scar dehiscence. All uterine ruptures during the 15 year period were discussed. There was no maternal mortality. Perinatal mortality with ...

It is important to evaluate the role of captivity as a potential stressor. An understanding of stress responses to capture and transition to captivity may inform the limitations of laboratory studies on wild animals, aid in understanding the consequences of introducing animals into captive environments, and help predict which species may be successful invasives. We investigated physiological effects of captivity by comparing at-capture blood variables in wild Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) in ...

Lesions were absent in virgin males ( n = 201) and virgin females ( n = 293). On postmortem examination ( n = 13, 12 males, 1 female), numerous well-defined mucosal and submucosal granulomas ...

The dunaimycins are a new complex of spiroketal 24-membered macrolides discovered in the fermentation broth of two actinomycetes. Based on taxonomic studies these two cultures, which were isolated from soil, were identified as Streptomyces diastatochromogenes strains AB 1691Q-321 and AB 1711J-452. The dunaimycins possess both immunosuppressive and antimicrobial activity.

Burmese python (Python bivittatus) is an invasive snake that has significantly affected ecosystems in southern Florida, United States. Aside from direct predation and competition, invasive species can also introduce nonnative pathogens that can adversely affect native species. The subfamily Serpentovirinae (order Nidovirales) is composed of positive-sense RNA viruses primarily found in reptiles. Some serpentoviruses, such as shingleback nidovirus, are associated with mortalities in wild populations, ...

The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity ( ~ 2 × 10 -6 ) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. ...

Background The Lung Volume Reduction Coil Treatment in Patients With Emphysema (RENEW) trial reported improvements in quality of life, pulmonary function, and exercise performance following endobronchial coil treatment. Objectives The purpose of this post hoc analysis was to identify baseline predictors, including quantitative CT measures, that identify patients most likely to significantly benefit from endobronchial coil therapy. Methods Quantitative CT analysis by an independent radiology laboratory and ...

Steven B. Tillis, Robert J. Ossiboff, James F. X. Wellehan,

Serpentoviruses are a subfamily of positive sense RNA viruses in the order Nidovirales, family Tobaniviridae, associated with respiratory disease in multiple clades of reptiles. While the broadest viral diversity is reported from captive pythons, other reptiles, including colubrid snakes, turtles, and lizards of captive and free-ranging origin are also known hosts. To better define serpentoviral diversity, eleven novel serpentovirus genomes were sequenced with an Illumina MiSeq and, when necessary, ...

Viruses from a new species of piscichuvirus were strongly associated with severe lymphocytic meningoencephalomyelitis in several free-ranging aquatic turtles from 3 coastal US states during 2009-2021. Sequencing identified 2 variants (freshwater turtle neural virus 1 [FTuNV1] and sea turtle neural virus 1 [STuNV1]) of the new piscichuvirus species in 3 turtles of 3 species. In situ hybridization localized viral mRNA to the inflamed region of the central nervous system in all 3 sequenced isolates and ...
