Home-range areas were determined for 21 wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. Annual minimum ranges were larger than previously reported for wild turkeys (i = 3,514 ha), and seasonal minimum ranges averaged 1,295 ha. Variation in annual home range size was correlated with the percentage of the area within each home range composed of habitat characteristics typical of young pine (Pinus spp.) plantations. Reducing the rate at which native stands have been converted to ...

Two-dimensional crystals of the Escherichia coli DNA gyrase B subunit were obtained upon specific interactions with novobiocin linked phospholipid films. A three-dimensional surface model of the protein was generated by analysing images of tilted negatively stained crystals. The structure showed, at 2·5 to 3·0 nm resolution, two elongated arms organised as a V-shaped protein: the bottom of the V contains the novobiocin binding site, and the extremities of the arms mediate protein—protein interactions ...

Novel monocyclic cyanoenones examined to date display unique features regarding chemical reactivity as Michael acceptors and biological potency. Remarkably, in some biological assays, the simple structure is more potent than pentacyclic triterpenoids (e.g., CDDO and bardoxolone methyl) and tricycles (e.g., TBE-31). Among monocyclic cyanoenones, 1 is a highly reactive Michael acceptor with thiol nucleophiles. Furthermore, an important feature of 1 is that its Michael addition is reversible. For the ...

We demonstrate for the first time that in a homogeneous nonamplifying physical system described by the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, the combined effects of two different perturbations (delayed nonlinear response and higher-order dispersion) can lead to adiabatic compression of fundamental solitons. This is unexpected since each of these perturbations operating independently destroys soliton propagation. Experimentally this is demonstrated by showing that 95 fsec fundamental solitons are redshifted ...

It is shown experimentally and theoretically that a sinusoidally modulated pulse evolves with time into a train of dark soliton-like pulses and then returns to its initial sinusoidal shape on propagation through a nonlinear single-mode fiber with positive group velocity dispersion. The experimental results are in agreement with predictions from the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

ABSTRACT Managed forest systems have implications for wildlife conservation because of their direct influence on condition and distribution of forest patches on the landscape. Spatial arrangement, structure, and composition of patches can influence reproductive outcomes for breeding birds by mediating nest site selection, survival, and predator–prey dynamics. Few studies have explored effects of local and adjacent forest‐stand structure and harvest‐induced edges on nest predation risk. Therefore, ...

While lean, stratified charge, operation addresses this issue, exhaust gas aftertreatment is more challenging compared with homogeneous operation and three-way catalyst after-treatment. This paper adopts a different approach: homogeneous charge direct injection (DI) operation with variable valve actuations which reduce throttling ...
