We present Spitzer and Chandra observations of the nearby (~260 pc) embedded stellar cluster in the Serpens cloud core. We observed, using Spitzer's IRAC and MIPS instruments, in six wavelength bands from 3 to 70 μm, to detect thermal emission from circumstellar disks and protostellar envelopes and to classify stars using color-color diagrams and SEDs. These data are combined with Chandra observations to examine the effects of circumstellar disks on stellar X-ray properties. Young diskless stars were ...

We present a new framework for predicting cognitive or other continuous-variable data from medical images. Current methods of probing the connection between medical images and other clinical data typically use voxel-based mass univariate approaches. These approaches do not take into account the multivariate, network-based interactions between the various areas of the brain and do not give readily interpretable metrics that describe how strongly cognitive function is related to neuroanatomical structure. ...

Using K2 data, we have identified 23 very low mass members of the $\rho$ Oph and Upper Scorpius star-forming region as having periodic photometric variability not easily explained by well-established physical mechanisms such as star spots, eclipsing binaries, or pulsation. All of these unusual stars are mid-to-late M dwarfs without evidence of active accretion, and with photometric periods generally $<$1 day. Often the unusual light curve signature takes the form of narrow flux dips; when we also have ...

The application of machine learning to longitudinal gene-expression profiles has demonstrated potential to decrease the assessment gap, between biochemical determination and clinical manifestation, of a patient's response to treatment. Although psoriasis is a proven testing ground for treatment-response prediction using transcriptomic data from clinically accessible skin biopsies, these biopsies are expensive, invasive, and challenging to obtain from certain body areas. Response prediction from ...

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is a heterogeneous spectrum of age-associated neurodegenerative diseases that include two main pathologic categories of tau (FTLD-Tau) and TDP-43 (FTLD-TDP) proteinopathies. These distinct proteinopathies are often clinically indistinguishable during life, posing a major obstacle for diagnosis and emerging therapeutic trials tailored to disease-specific mechanisms. Moreover, MRI-derived measures have had limited success to date discriminating between FTLD-Tau ...

In November 1986, a pilot needle and syringe exchange was established in Sydney adjacent to a methadone maintenance unit. A retrospective study was carried out to determine the effect of increasing the availability of sterile needles and syringes on the treatment outcome of the methadone maintenance unit. In this study, an increase in availability of sterile needles and syringes was not found to be associated with an increase in the presence of illicit injectable drugs in the urine specimens of ...

Subjects were predominantly heterosexual men in their late twenties with limited secondary education. The majority (77%) had been injecting drugs for more than two years and were daily (91%) injectors of heroin (87%). Eighty per cent had shared injection equipment. Condom use was ...

We report the observation of a local vibrational mode (LVM) in hydrostatically stressed, Si-doped GaAs. The corresponding infrared absorption peak is distinct from the ${\mathrm{Si}}_{\mathrm{Ga}}$ shallow-donor LVM peak and is assigned to the Si DX center. The relative intensities of the Si DX LVM and the Si shallow-donor LVM peaks and photoquenching behavior of the sample are consistent with the appearance of a defect which binds two electrons as it undergoes a large lattice relaxation at approximately ...

Empirical research indicates that posttreatment factors, including employment, residential stability, and social and family support, influence the resiliency of treatment outcomes. The degree to which current treatment methods affect such outcomes is the subject of much research and debate. By focusing directly on community functioning and social rehabilitation, case management can positively ...

Many argue that if social workers are to become more politically active, schools of social work must play a vital role. It was found that less than 20% of undergraduate programs and less than 50% ...

Such collaborations require practitioners to have skills not found in mainstream social work curricula. This paper explores how a new MSW program evolved through dialog with community leaders and resulted in a curriculum with a sole concentration of community partnerships.

Most of the research and policy debate related to PL 104-193, the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, has centered on the time limits, family caps, work requirements, and sanctions imposed on Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) recipients and states. While those parts of the bill are critical, this article argues that child support enforcement, which is usually only a footnote in the dialogue, is an integral component of welfare reform and the element ...

Expression, localization and regulation of different cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) subunits account for specificity in the intracellular cAMP/PKA signaling pathway. In Aplysia neurons, two classes of PKA (I and II) differing in their regulatory (R) subunits have been characterized. Type I is mostly soluble in the cell body, and type II enriched at the synaptic endings. Although both types are necessary for long-term changes in synaptic plasticity, their differences in cellular localization ...

The authors focus on the importance of interpersonal skills for the human service manager. Utilizing the significant replication of Mintzberg's study, with eight human services managers, the primacy of communication skills is emphasized. Case managers have been viewed as engaging in direct practice, community practice, or both. This article offers a third view: Case managers also engage in the practice of management. Case managers perform the 10 roles developed in Mintzberg's original study. These roles are divided into three groups: interpersonal, including ...
