We aimed to assess the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in adult patients with GCK-MODY and HNF1A-MODY in Poland and to identify biochemical and clinical risk factors associated with its occurrence. We examined 74 GCK mutation carriers, 51 with diabetes and 23 with prediabetes, respectively, and 63 patients with HNF1A-MODY. Retinal photographs, 12 for each patient, were done by a fundus camera. Signs of DR were graded according to the DR disease severity scale. Statistical tests were performed ...

Objective Mutations in the glucokinase ( GCK ) gene, along with hepatocyte nuclear factor 1A ( HNF1A ) gene mutations, are the most frequent cause of maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY). GCK-MODY patients are typically characterized by a moderate fasting hyperglycemia; however, little is known about atherosclerosis and intermediate-related phenotypes in these subjects. Design To examine carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and endothelial function assessed by brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation ( ...

AbstractJan Alojzy Matejko (June 24, 1838–November I, 1893), born and raised in Krakow, where he remained his entire life and died, has a special place in Polish culture and nationalism. During his lifetime his art created much controversy among his countrymen, was censored by the Russian czarist government, and during World War II headed the blacklist of works to be destroyed by the German armies invading Poland. We examined the impact of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) and continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGM) during pregnancy in women with pre-gestational type 1 diabetes (T1DM) on glycemic control and subsequent adverse outcomes. In this observational, one-center study we analyzed records of consecutive 109 T1DM pregnancies (2016-2017). The final analyzed group consisted of 81 singleton pregnancies who met inclusion and exclusion criteria. We searched for the association between the use ...

Most pregnant women with type 1 diabetes mellitus achieve HbA1c targets; however, macrosomia remains prevalent and better pregnancy glycaemic markers are therefore needed. 1,5-Anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) is a short-term marker of glycaemia, reflecting a period of 1 to 2 weeks. Its excretion rate depends on the renal glucose threshold and thus it is unclear whether it may be used in pregnant type 1 diabetes women. We evaluated 1,5-AG as a glycaemic marker and birthweight predictor in pregnant women with ...

Mutations in the glucokinase ( GCK) gene result in maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY). Pharmacotherapy is not effective in GCK MODY. Thus, nutritional intervention seems to be the only therapeutic option. This study evaluated the effect of the quantity of dietary carbohydrate on glucose levels in 10 GCK mutation carriers: seven with MODY and three with prediabetes. All patients were exposed to high-carbohydrate diets for 2 days and then switched to low-carbohydrate diets (60% versus 25% of ...

Background and aims An inverse relationship between lipid levels and atrial fibrillation (AF) has been suggested, but whether the association is upheld for all age groups remains unclear. The aim of the study was to examine associations between lipid levels and AF by age groups in a nationwide study in Poland. Methods Multivariate Poisson regression models were used to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) for AF by lipid levels. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ( ...
