The scaffold attachment factor B1 and B2 genes, SAFB1/SAFB2 (both located on chromosome 19p13.3) have recently been suggested as tumour suppressor genes involved in breast cancer development. The assumption was based on functional properties of the two genes and loss of heterozygosity of intragenic markers in breast tumours further strengthened the postulated hypothesis. In addition, linkage studies in Swedish breast cancer families also indicate the presence of a susceptibility gene for breast cancer ...

Abstract. A major international experiment on ammonia (NH3) biosphere-atmosphere exchange was conducted over intensively managed grassland at Braunschweig, Germany. The experimental strategy was developed to allow an integrated analysis of different features of NH3 exchange including: a) quantification of nearby emissions and advection effects, b) estimation of net NH3 fluxes with the canopy by a range of micrometeorological measurements, c) analysis of the sources and sinks of NH3 within the plant ...

The impact of adding low-dose continuous prednisone (7.5 mg daily) to an adjuvant cyclophosphamide-methotrexate-5-fluorouracil chemotherapy regimen was investigated in a randomized trial of 505 pre- and perimenopausal patients with operable breast cancer and one to three axillary lymph node mA©tastases (Ludwig Breast Cancer Study I). As a consequence of lower hematological toxicity a significantly higher dose of cyclophosphamide-methotrexate-5-fluorouracil could be administered with added prednisone ( ...

Abstract. Grasslands represent canopies with a complex structure where sources and sinks of ammonia (NH3) may coexist at the plant level. Moreover, management practices such as mowing, hay production and grazing may change the composition of the sward and hence the source-sink relationship at the canopy level as well as the interaction with the atmosphere. There is therefore a need to understand the exchange of ammonia between grasslands and the atmosphere better, especially regarding the location ...

Abstract. A new biophysical model SURFATM-NH3, simulating the ammonia (NH3) exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere is presented. SURFATM-NH3 consists of two coupled models: (i) an energy budget model and (ii) a pollutant exchange model, which distinguish the soil and plant exchange processes. The model describes the exchanges in terms of adsorption to leaf cuticles and bi-directional transport through leaf stomata and soil. The results of the model are compared with the flux measurements ...

Abstract Short- and long-term responses of inorganic N pools and plant-atmosphere NH3 exchange to changes in external N supply were investigated in 11-week-old plants of two grass species,Lolium perenne and Bromus erectus, characteristic of N-rich and N-poor grassland ecosystems, respectively. A switch of root N source from NO3 − to NH4 + caused within 3 h a 3- to 6-fold increase in leaf apoplastic NH4 + concentration and a simultaneous decrease in apoplastic pH of about 0.4 pH units in both species. ...

Abstract Damage caused by pine weevil ( Hylobius abietus L.) to planted seedlings and cuttings of Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was studied at five clearcut sites in south-eastern Sweden. The main objective was to compare the two types of stock in terms of attack frequency and mortality due to pine weevil feeding. Cuttings and seedlings with the same initial stem-base diameter (4 mm) were compared. Two sites were harvested and scarified shortly before planting, two were harvested shortly before ...

Summary To test the hypothesis that the direct thrombin inhibitor, melagatran is able to inhibit local pro-carboxypeptidase U (proCPU) activation that occurs during thrombolytic treatment, t-PA alone, or in combination with melagatran, was given to dogs with a coronary artery thrombosis. Blood samples from the great cardiac vein and aorta were collected at baseline, during thrombus formation, throughout the t-PA±melagatran infusion and during the patency period, for analysis of CPU activity using ...

• Apoplastic and bulk tissue concentrations of NH4+ and H+ were measured during senescence of intact (attached) and excised ryegrass (Lolium perenne) leaves differing in nitrogen and carbon status. The potential for NH3 emission from the senescing leaves was estimated on the basis of the ratio between [NH4+] and [H+], designated the Γ-value, in apoplastic solution and bulk tissue. • Attached leaves with visual symptoms of senescence showed two to three times higher [NH4+] and 0.5–1 unit lower pH in both apoplastic ...

The Japanese quail ( Coturnix japonica ) is a widely used model species for studying the roles of steroid hormones in avian sex differentiation. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the significance of estrogen receptors α and β (ERα and ERβ) in normal sex differentiation of the reproductive organs in the Japanese quail and in xenoestrogen-induced disruption of reproductive organ differentiation. Real-time PCR indicated that ERα ( ESR1 ) mRNA is expressed in both right and left gonads and Müllerian ...

Background and purpose There is no consensus on the best rehabilitation regime after uncemented total hip arthroplasty. Theoretically, bone ingrowth into the implant should benefit from initial partial weight bearing. We investigated whether the degree of postoperative weight bearing influences the periprosthetic bone mineral density (BMD) and/or the stability of the CLS stem.Patients and methods 38 patients received an uncemented CLS stem and were randomized to either unrestricted postoperative ...

The conflicting results from studies over tight glucose control in intensive care unit (ICU) patients ask for a continuous on-line real-time glucose monitoring in future. Here, intravenous microdialysis was tested in ICU patients and healthy volunteers. Primary aims were technical feasibility and accuracy.A microdialysis catheter was inserted into a peripheral vein. ICU patients (n=10) were studied for up to 5 days. Healthy volunteers (n=6) were studied on one occasion. Recordings were monitored during ...

Gonadal estrogen plays an important role in the differentiation of a female phenotype in birds. Exogenous compounds that interfere with estrogen signaling, for instance by binding to the estrogen receptors alpha and beta (ERα and ERβ), are therefore potential disruptors of sexual differentiation in birds. The ERα agonist propyl-pyrazole-triol (PPT), the ERα antagonist methyl piperidino pyrazole (MPP) and the ERβ agonist diarylproprionitrile (DPN) were used in the present study to explore the roles of ...

High order finite difference approximations are derived for the second order wave equation with discontinuous coefficients, on rectangular geometries. The discontinuity is treated by splitting the domain at the discontinuities in a multi block fashion. Each sub-domain is discretized with compact second derivative summation by parts operators and the blocks are patched together to a global domain using the projection method. This guarantees a conservative, strictly stable and high order accurate ...

This paper concerns energy stability on curvilinear grids and its impact on steady-state calulations. We have done computations for the Euler equations using fifth order summation-by-parts block and diagonal norm schemes. By imposing the boundary conditions weakly we obtain a fifth order energy-stable scheme. The calculations indicate the significance of energy stability in order to obtain convergence to steady state. Furthermore, the difference operators are improved such that faster convergence ...

The herbicide glufosinate, which is also called phosphinothricin (PPT), is known to inhibit glutamine synthetase and thus causes a blockage of ammonium (re)assimilation in plants. The objective of the present study was to test whether application of this herbicide results in an ammonia volatilization from the plants and to quantify nitrogen loss via ammonia emission. Four different weed species (Chenopodium album, Echinocloa crus-galli, Solanum nigrum, Tripleurospermum inodorum) were grown as monocultures ...
