We demonstrate a rapid fabrication procedure for solvent-resistant microfluidic devices based on the perfluoropolyether (PFPE) SIFEL. We carefully modified the poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micromolding procedure, such that it can still be executed using the standard facilities for PDMS devices. Most importantly, devices with a thin SIFEL layer for the patterned channels and a PDMS support layer on top offered the best of two worlds in terms of chemical and mechanical stability during fabrication and ...

Heavy menstrual bleeding is an important health problem. Two frequently used therapies are the levonorgestrel intra-uterine system (LNG-IUS) and endometrial ablation. The LNG-IUS can be applied easily by the general practitioner, which saves costs, but has considerable failure rates. As an alternative, endometrial ablation is also very effective, but this treatment has to be performed by a gynaecologist. Due to lack of direct comparison of LNG-IUS with endometrial ablation, there is no evidence based ...

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is the "master clock" of the mammalian brain. It coordinates the peripheral clocks in the body, including the pineal clock that receives SCN input via a multisynaptic noradrenergic pathway. Rhythmic pineal melatonin production is disrupted in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here we show that the clock genes hBmal1, hCry1, and hPer1 were rhythmically expressed in the pineal of controls (Braak 0). Moreover, hPer1 and hbeta1-adrenergic receptor (hbeta1-ADR) mRNA were positively ...

Importance It is uncertain whether invasive ventilation can use lower positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) in critically ill patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Objective To determine whether a lower PEEP strategy is noninferior to a higher PEEP strategy regarding duration of mechanical ventilation at 28 days. Design, Setting, and Participants Noninferiority randomized clinical trial conducted from October 26, 2017, through December 17, 2019, in 8 intensive care units (ICUs) in the ...

Importance It remains uncertain whether nebulization of mucolytics with bronchodilators should be applied for clinical indication or preventively in intensive care unit (ICU) patients receiving invasive ventilation. Objective To determine if a strategy that uses nebulization for clinical indication (on-demand) is noninferior to one that uses preventive (routine) nebulization. Design, Setting, and Participants Randomized clinical trial enrolling adult patients expected to need invasive ventilation for more than ...

Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) is an animal pathogen and an important model organism, whose receptor requirements are poorly understood. Here, we employed a genome-wide haploid genetic screen to identify novel EMCV host factors. In addition to the previously described picornavirus receptors sialic acid and glycosaminoglycans, this screen unveiled important new host factors for EMCV. These factors include components of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling pathway, such as the potential receptors ...

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine tumor, and no effective treatment is available to date. Mouse models of SCLC based on the inactivation of Rb1 and Trp53 show frequent amplifications of the Nfib and Mycl genes. Here, we report that, although overexpression of either transcription factor accelerates tumor growth, NFIB specifically promotes metastatic spread. High NFIB levels are associated with expansive growth of a poorly differentiated and almost exclusively E-cadherin ( ...

Dynamics simulation plays a key role in the design, verification, and operation planning of space manipulator systems because of the difficulties of ground-based physical tests with large, flexible robotic systems. Modeling of contact dynamics has increasingly become an essential step in dynamics simulation of space station robotic operations (such as the assembly and maintenance of the station). This role requires the modeling tool to have very high fidelity. This paper describes a research project ...

The complex stiffness of resilient elements is an important parameter required in order to model vibration isolation for many applications. Measurement methods are being standardized which allow such a stiffness to be measured as a function of excitation frequency for known loading conditions. This paper describes one such method, the direct method, in which the resilient element is placed between two large blocks, the vibrations of which are measured. A number of refinements to this method are ...

Henk Jan Van Vliet,

Since the end of the 1960s, the Dutch have deliberately developed drug policies that both fit their needs and their tradition of solving social problems. This includes the notion that these policies have to be cost-effective. This strategy has almost automatically led to an uneasy relationship not only with the international drug control system and its administrators but also with countries advocating “War on Drugs” type policies. Two basic elements of this policy are presented here. The decriminalization ...

One of the major transitions in recent scientific research is the rise of network theory motivating a variety∈dexvariety of new research programmes in and across various disciplines. Economic geography∈dexgeography has been no exception. The work on networks in economic geography can be divided into two types of research. First, there are studies on inter-firm networks and their impact on firm performance. For a large part, such studies have been carried out in the context of geographical clusters, ...
