Background. The effectiveness of adjuvant chemotherapy in soft tissue sarcomas remains a matter of controversy. The authors reviewed their experience with 14 patients with localized disease treated with intensive doxorubicin-cisplatin-ifosfamide-based chemotherapy. Methods. Fourteen patients with newly diagnosed nonmetastatic synovial sarcoma seen between 1985 and 1992 received intensive chemotherapy and local radiation therapy before surgical resection, followed in most patients by intensive postoperative ...

Higher ocean productivity has often been proposed to explain lower atmospheric carbon dioxide during the last glacial episodes. But recent consideration of marine cores from different areas show that higher local productivity can be postulated for interglacials as well as for glacial periods. Based on the detailed study of two piston cores from the northwest Africa upwelling system, the results presented here, including δ18O stratigraphy, organic carbon contents and fluxes, TiAl ratios and grain ...

The accumulation of biogeochemical (organic carbon, calcium carbonates, molybdenum and iodine), micropalaeontological (benthic foraminifera) and terrigenous markers (grain-size, Si/Al, Zr/Al, K/Al) over the last 70,000 years in one core (Sedorqua-11K) on the northwest African margin off Cap Blanc has been used to reconstruct past variations of local upwelling intensity and oceanic productivity. The study demonstrates that productivity in this area increased during Stage 3, particularly between 40,000 ...

Abstract For millennia, the smile has been recognised as a powerful communication device, offering benefits to both giver and receiver with few drawbacks. A sign of compassion, empathy and friendliness, smiling can benefit healthcare professionals and their patients, helping to build a relationship of trust. But beware the false smile, which is all too easily identified and may do more harm than good. In this review, we explore the literature surrounding smiling in healthcare and beyond, discussing ...

ABSTRACT Locusts do not regulate thoracic temperature during flight and as a result the thoracic temperature of a flying locust generally exceeds ambient temperature by 5-8 °C. Elevated thoracic temperatures were shown to affect wing-beat frequency in intact and deafferented Locusta migratoria. Tethered locusts were flown in a wind tunnel. Temperature was elevated by increasing the ambient temperature of the apparatus and by exposing flying animals to heat pulses. Electromyographic (EMG) recordings ...

Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that appears in brain and cerebrospinal fluid following peripheral immune challenges and central infections or injury. We examined the consequences of i.c.v. infusion of IL-1beta on mRNA expression of several immune markers and on recruitment of peripheral leukocytes. Awake rats were infused with IL-1beta (100 ng/rat) into the lateral ventricle, and 0.5, 2, 4, 8, 12, or 24 h later, animals were killed and their fresh-frozen brains processed ...

Jane M. Foster, Graham Shimmield,

A multidisciplinary cruise to the northern North Sea was undertaken during June 1999 to carry out a Lagrangian study of an Emiliania huxleyi bloom. During this experiment, the naturally occurring radionuclide, 234Th, was measured in the water column to estimate particle fluxes and resulting residence times. Simple steady state modelling of changes in 234Th activity suggests an increase in scavenging efficiency over an 8 day period. The steady state 234Th flux ranges from 357 to a maximum of 1390 ...

Philip A. Townsend, Jane R. Foster,

The hydrology of riparian wetlands worldwide has been altered extensively owing to the construction and operation of dams. We developed a model for the Roanoke River floodplain (United States) to simulate flood extent and duration based on a power law correlation between inundation area A , as mapped from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, and river discharge Q . Model fit was 0.955 for the upper portion of the study area and 0.789 for the tidally influenced lower section. We then compared hydroperiod ...

Jane A. Foster, Ning Quan, Edra L Stern, Krister Kristensson, Miles Herkenham,

Studies have demonstrated neuronal expression of class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) mRNA and protein in normal and developing brain and in response to injury or viral infection. We report neuronal expression of class I MHC mRNA in hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) neurons in rats following systemic infection with Trypanosoma brucei brucei parasites (chronic) and in response to intravenous 1 mg/kg lipopolysaccharide administration (acute peripheral) and in striatal neurons following ...

Earth Observing 1 (EO-1) Hyperion and Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) imagery were used to predict canopy nitrogen (N) concentration for mixed oak forests of Green Ridge State Forest in Maryland. Nitrogen concentration was estimated for 27 ground plots using leaf samples of the dominant tree species from each plot that were dried, ground and analyzed in the laboratory for foliar N concentration. Foliar N data were composited based on relative species composition to determine ...

Objective: To examine the neurobiological basis of personality and depression. Method: We examined preclinical and clinical studies related to neuroanatomy, neuroendocrine, molecular, and genetic alterations in depressed patients. We considered whether common neurobiological factors might be shared between personality and depression. Results: Preclinical studies provide insights into the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of depression including neuroendocrine alterations ...
