Background: Earlier studies have shown that aetiology makes a difference in the outcome of epilepsy, but there is a paucity of follow-up studies to evaluate the possibilities of achieving seizure freedom in initially refractory epilepsy. Methods: We evaluated the cause of epilepsy based on high-resolution brain MRI and patient history in 119 consecutive thoroughly examined adult patients with refractory focal epilepsy followed up in our centre. We also evaluated the influence of aetiology and duration of epilepsy ...

High-tech companies conducting product development need to collect and analyze requirements effectively, plan and implement releases, and allocate requirements to appropriate releases. Requirements and release management are complicated because development activities typically are scattered across multiple sites, involve multiple partners in different countries, leverage various development methods and tools, and are realized through various organizational arrangements such as release projects in ...

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 Alpha and Beta variants became dominant in Finland in spring 2021 but had diminished by summer. We used phylogenetic clustering to identify sources of spreading. We found that outbreaks were mostly seeded by a few introductions, highlighting the importance of surveillance and prevention policies.

Increasing evidence supports the role of soluble inflammatory mediators in the pathogenesis of refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is a well-described pathohistological abnormality in TLE. The association of proinflammatory cytokines with epileptic disease profiles is well established; however, the potential significance of circulating interleukin 10 (IL-10), particularly in TLE-associated HS, is still poorly understood. Therefore, taking into consideration the neuroprotective ...

Increased production of cell-free DNA (cf-DNA), a marker of inflammation, cell death and degeneration, has been observed in stroke and severe traumatic brain injury among other medical conditions. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the significance of cf-DNA in patients with focal epilepsy.cf-DNA was measured in 167 consecutive well-evaluated patients with focal epilepsy (147 with refractory epilepsy). Epilepsy was characterized based on the patient history, electroclinical findings, ...

The aim of this investigation was to find out how properties of a flocculation agent and flocculation kinetics affect the morphology of fibre flocs and how dewatering of a fibre suspension may be attributed to floc morphology. Fibre flocculation, analysed in terms of floc size, mass fractal dimension, floc strength, and the kinetic constant of flocculation, was measured with a digital image analysis system using cationic polyacrylamides as flocculants and NaCl as a coagulant. The results suggest ...

The continuously increasing demand for faster data traffic of our telecommunication devices requires new and better materials and devices that operate at higher frequencies than today. In this work, a porous composite of silica nanoshells and cellulose nanofibers is demonstrated as a suitable candidate of dielectric substrates to be used in future 6G frequency bands. The hollow nanospheres of amorphous SiO2 with outstanding electromagnetic properties were obtained by a template-assisted Stöber process, ...

Antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADA) are present in multiple neurological manifestations, such as stiff-person syndrome, cerebellar ataxia, limbic encephalitis, and epilepsy. Increasing data support the clinical significance of GADA as an autoimmune etiology of epilepsy, however, there is not yet definitive evidence to confirm the pathogenic link between GADA and epilepsy.Interleukin-6 (IL-6), a pro-convulsive and neurotoxic cytokine, and interleukin-10 (IL-10), an anti-inflammatory ...

Objective: Cell-free DNA (cf-DNA) is a marker of inflammation and cell death. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the role of cf-DNA as a putative biomarker in refractory epilepsy. Methods: Baseline concentration of cf-DNA was measured in the serum of 51 carefully evaluated refractory epilepsy patients undergoing video-EEG monitoring. Epilepsy was classified based on seizure semiology, patient history, and imaging findings. Majority of the patients (47) had focal epilepsy. The association ...

Abstract Background A prior small-scale single center study suggested an association between celiac disease (CD)-type immunity and refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with hippocampal sclerosis (HS). The present study addresses this putative association in a large, well-characterized group of drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) patients. These patients were grouped based on the spectrum of CD and gluten sensitivity-associated antibodies. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 253 consecutive adult epilepsy ...

Abstract The aim of this prospective single-institution clinical trial (NCT02002455) was to evaluate the potential of advanced post-processing methods for 18 F-Fluciclovine PET and multisequence multiparametric MRI in the prediction of prostate cancer (PCa) aggressiveness, defined by Gleason Grade Group (GGG). 21 patients with PCa underwent PET/CT, PET/MRI and MRI before prostatectomy. DWI was post-processed using kurtosis (ADC k , K), mono- (ADC m ), and biexponential functions (f, D p , D f ) while Logan plots ...
