Background: Cancer-associated fibroblast (CAFs) are the most abundant cells in the tumor microenvironment, able to secrete growth factors and act on tumor progression. Melatonin is associated with several mechanisms of action with oncostatics and oncoprotectors effects, and also participate in the reduction of synthesis of surrounding fibroblasts and endothelial cells in breast cancer. Objective: The objectives of this study were to determine the effectiveness of melatonin in cell viability and expression ...

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the longevity of restorations in the posterior primary teeth of children attending to a public paediatric dental clinic and to test the factors associated with failures. Patient records of 329 children (162 boys and 166 girls) were used for collecting and analyzing data. A total of 565 restorations in primary teeth were included in the study. All children enrolled in the study were classified as high caries risk. The longevity of restorations from ...

Background: Oral cancer is the most common type of head and neck cancer and its high rate of mortality and morbidity is closely related to the processes of angiogenesis and tumor metastasis. The overexpression of the pro-angiogenic genes, HIF-1α and VEGF, and pro-metastatic gene, ROCK-1, are associated with unfavorable prognosis in oral carcinoma. Melatonin has oncostatic, antiangiogenic and antimetastatic properties in several types of neoplasms, although its relationship with oral cancer has been ...

The biological underpinnings of sex-related differences in decision-making are still under-explored. The COMT gene is related to sexual dimorphism and with different choices made under uncertainty, albeit no study has specifically investigated a moderation effect of sex on the association between the COMT gene and the performance on decision-making paradigms. In this study, we investigated the influence of the COMT Val158Met polymorphism on Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) performance depending on sex in ...

Background: West Nile virus (WNV) was first sequenced in Brazil in 2019, when it was isolated from a horse in the Espírito Santo state. Despite multiple studies reporting serological evidence suggestive of past circulation since 2004, WNV remains a low priority for surveillance and public health, such that much is still unknown about its genomic diversity, evolution, and transmission in the country. Methods: A combination of diagnostic assays, nanopore sequencing, phylogenetic inference, and epidemiological ...

Background HTLV-1 infection is endemic in Brazil. About 1 to 2% of the Brazilian population is estimated to be infected, but most infected HTLV-1 individuals do not know about their own infection, which favors the continuity of sexual and vertical virus transmission. In addition, HTLV-1 associated central nervous system diseases and their pathophysiologic mechanisms are not fully understood. Obesity is a chronic disease caused by both environmental and genetic factors. Epidemiological studies have documented that increased energy intake and sedentary lifestyle, as well as a genetic contribution, are forces behind the obesity epidemic. Nonetheless, until this moment, few studies addressed the relationship between different types of impulsivity and the single nucleotide polymorphism caused by a substitution of valine (val) with methionine (met) in the 158 codon of the Catechol-o-Methyltransferase gene (COMT-val158met). The present study aimed to investigate the association between val158met COMT polymorphism and impulsive behavior ...
