Single crystals of KTiOPO4 (KTP) have been grown from flux compositions situated within the KPO3-K4P2O7 binary system. Crystals up to 15 × 15 × 5 mm in size were obtained from pure and modified fluxes. The solubility of KTP in the flux composition K6P4O13 has been determined between 1050°C and 580°C. Growth of KTP has been performed using the following techniques: spontaneous nucleation; slow cooling in a furnace equipped with accelerated crucible rotation (ACR) and cooling finger; gradient transport ...

The association of heat-stable enterotoxin (STa) produced by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli 431 with isolated rat intestinal epithelial cells and brush border membranes was characterized. Specific binding of strain 431 125I-STa to a single class of specific high-affinity receptors was saturable and temperature dependent and reached a maximum between 5 and 10 min. A 1,000-fold excess of unlabeled 431 STa competitively displaced 90 to 95% of radiolabeled enterotoxin bound to brush border membranes. ...

The mechanism of activation of intestinal guanylate cyclase by Escherichia coli heat-stable enterotoxin (STa) has been studied by using isolated rat intestinal epithelial cells and purified brush border membrane (BBM) preparations. Inhibitors of prostaglandin biosynthesis, quinacrine and 5,8,11,14-eicosatetraynoic acid (ETYA), significantly reduced intracellular levels of cyclic guanosine 3', 5'-monophosphate in isolated cells treated with STa. Although these data suggested that activation of phospholipase ...

A retrospective review of 677 patients who tested positive for the human immunodeficiency virus, evaluated from January 1986 to February 1988, demonstrated 119 patients (18 percent) with anal condylomata. Demographics of these patients were similar to the total human immunodeficiency virus group; ages ranged from 19 to 86 years (mean, 25 years). Ninety-four percent of patients were men, 62 percent were white, 30 percent were black, and 10 percent were other races, primarily Hispanic. Ten percent of ...

We have previously reported the characterization of mAb derived against NC-37 target cells. mAb 18C2 and 1E7 inhibit fish cytotoxicity by binding to target cells and thus preventing the formation of conjugates with fish nonspecific cytotoxic cells (NCC). It was therefore presumed that these inhibitory mAb were specific for the target cell Ag necessary for effector cell recognition. mAb 1D4 and 7C6 bind to NC-37 cells but do not inhibit fish cytotoxic activity. We now report the isolation and purification ...

Abstract Rough silicon surfaces resulting from CF 4 reactive ion etching have been studied by scanning electron microscopy/scanning Auger microscopy and x‐ray photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental data demonstrate a roughening mechanism based on laterally non‐uniform etch rates due to the existence of involatile surface residues.

The geometrical and insulating properties of regular arrays of oxide masked silicon trenches formed by reactive ion etching have been utilized to enable in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of specific parts of the trench structures. Different surface portions of the sample structure are differentiated by using (i) grazing incidence x-ray irradiation which results in shadowing of the trench bottoms and (ii) electrostatic charging of the insulating portions (e.g., the oxide mask) which shifts spectral ...
