The aim of this systematic review was to identify the intrapersonal, interpersonal, environmental, and time correlates of sedentary behaviour in university students. Records from 12 electronic databases were screened by two independent reviewers. Inclusion criteria included: (i) peer-reviewed articles written ...

In 2005, Brazil addressed the environmental challenges posed by ballast water through a unilateral regulation, called the Maritime Standard N° 20 (NORMAM-20), applied to all shipping in her waters. This world-leading decision was the culmination of a process that started during the 1990′s. Here, we summarize how these ballast water regulations were brought in and adopted and present the findings of 10 years of enforcement (2005–2015) in 39 ports along the Brazilian coast. We show that compliance with ...

This study explores the interpretation of null and overt object pronouns by Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and European Portuguese (EP) bidialectal bilinguals. Object pronouns are a particularly good domain to examine, given that, particularly with respect to null objects, the underlying syntax as well as the semantic and discourse constraints that regulate their distributions in the two varieties are superficially different but inherently similar. We test the extent to which native BP speakers who moved ...

The objective of this review was to synthesise the evidence on the levels of sedentary behaviour in university students. Screened records from 13 databases were included if (i) published after 2007 and (ii) reported on university students’ amount of total or domain-specific sedentary behaviour. This paper explores the potential for manufacturing internally cured concretes with lightweight aggregate (LWA) that has different initial moisture contents prior to mixing: oven-dry, 24 h pre-wetted, and vacuum saturated. Results show that when LWA is used in an oven-dry condition it can absorb water from the paste prior to set which will be returned to the system as internal curing water. When mixture proportion adjustments are properly made to account for the water absorbed by the aggregate before ...

The objective of this work was to better understand how atomic force microscopy (AFM) and lateral force microscopy (LFM) techniques can be used as tools to understand the nanostructure and microstructure of cement and cement hydration products. AFM and LFM techniques were used on mortar samples to distinguish between CSH, CH, and unhydrated cement particles. The LFM technique appears to be more sensitive to topographic changes than conventional AFM and it can more clearly distinguish between the different ...

Fluid ingress is a primary factor that influences freeze-thaw damage in concrete. This paper discusses the influence of fluid ingress on freeze-thaw damage development. Specifically, this paper examines the influence of entrained air content on the rate of water absorption, the degree of saturation, and the relationship between the saturation level and freeze-thaw damage. The results indicate that whereas air content delays the time it takes for concrete to reach a critical degree of saturation ...

This paper discusses the results of a research program that studied the influence of internal curing on the microstructure of mortars. Internal curing uses water-filled lightweight aggregates (LWAs) to supply additional water to the cement paste as it hydrates, thereby enabling an increase in the degree of hydration. The increased hydration can result in the densification of the microstructure. In particular, the densification occurs at the interfacial zone around the LWAs. The current work attempts ...

We undertook a capacity-building exercise around marine protected areas (MPAs) that involved both local nongovernmental organization (NGO) community workers and a government fisheries officer, so that community engagement could be directly interfaced with fisheries operations and policy. Targeting a government worker is a relatively new approach. Our methodology used a modified nominal group technique and Delphi technique to develop personal action plans to facilitate the future of sustainable MPAs ...

This study set out to test the hypothesis that hurricanes and tropical storms limit the recruitment and subsequent survival of massive non-branching corals on the barrier reef off the coast of Belize in the Gulf of Honduras. Overall, the surface areas of 523 individual coral specimens were measured, and recruitment dates were then modelled. There was no significant difference in coral cover or coral biodiversity between any of the sites studied (p > 0.1). There were significant differences in non-branching ...

Analytical and numerical methods are used to solve Poisson's equation for carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (FETs) with a cylindrical surrounding gate and Schottky-barrier contacts to the source and drain. The effect on the nanotube potential profile of varying the work functions of all the electrodes, and the thickness and permittivity of the gate dielectric, is investigated. From these results, the general trends to be expected in the above-threshold drain current-voltage characteristics ...
