We report new archaeological excavations from northern Australia revealing part of a charcoal design likely to be c. 28,000 years old (and chrono-stratigraphically constrained within the period 15,600-45,600 cal BP) on a small rock slab fallen from the ceiling at the rockshelter of Nawarla Gabarnmang in Jawoyn country, Arnhem Land. This represents the oldest confirmed pictograph in Australia.

Abstract The Chauvet cave (UNESCO World Heritage site, France) is located in the Ardèche Gorge, a unique physical and cultural landscape. Its setting within the gorge—overlooking a meander cutoff containing a natural arch called the Pont d’Arc—is also remarkable. Investigating possible associations between sites’ physical and cultural settings, chronologies of human occupation, and access conditions has become a major theme in archeological research. The present study aims to reconstruct the landscape ...

The pathophysiology of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains poorly understood. We assessed the relation between feeding strategies, intestinal microbiota composition, and the development of NEC. We performed a prospective nationwide population-based study, EPIPAGE2 (Etude Epidémiologique sur les Petits Ages Gestationnels), including preterm infants born at <32 wk of gestation in France in 2011. From individual characteristics observed during the first week of life, we calculated a propensity score ...

We report here the results of the GRAAPH-2003 trial with long-term follow-up in 45 patients with de novo Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Imatinib-based strategy improved the 4-year overall survival (OS) up to 52% versus 20% in the pre-imatinib LALA-94 trial (P = .0001). Despite the selection in patients who actually underwent transplantation, these results suggest that allogeneic or autologous stem cell transplants (SCTs) still have a place in overcoming the poor ...

Abstract Total cellular glycopeptides of 7 human uroepithelial cell lines that differ in the grade of transformation (TGr) were analysed by gel filtration and affinity chromatography on immobilized lectins. The 4 cell lines that are tumorigenic in nude mice and invasive in vitro (TGr III) possess more highly branched, tri‐ and tetraantennary N‐acetyllactosaminic glycans, with less biantennary glycans than the 2 non‐tumorigenic, non‐invasive (TGr II) cell lines examined. The only exception to this general ...

Abstract D.c. polarography was used to establish the equilibria existing in Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) systems with d -glucosamine and d -galactosamine. The results clearly indicated the formation of 1:1 complexes, ML, and allowed calculation of the stability constants of some complexes. The present results completed very well the potentiometric and spectroscopic data obtained earlier. The reduction mechanisms and the electrochemical behaviour of the formed complexes were also established.

Tungsten carbides were prepared by temperature-programmed reaction of WO3 with methane/hydrogen mixture and activated according to several thermal treatments by varying the temperature or the feed composition. Modification of these parameters was expected to change the surface composition (C/W). Such surface modifications have been related to acid–base properties observed in the decomposition of isopropanol. Finally, it was found that such acidic properties are probably involved in the dehydrohalogenation ...

A crucial step in the metastatic process is the interaction between the endothelial molecule E-selectin and its tumoral ligands sialyl-Lewis- and sialyl-Lewis. Sialyltranferases are involved in the biosynthesis of these ligands. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of tumoral sialyltransferase expression and of circulating soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin) in node-negative breast cancer patients.Using a multiplex RT-PCR method, we measured the expression of five sialyltransferases ( ...

The animal sialyltransferases, which catalyze the transfer of sialic acid to the glycan moiety of glycoconjugates, are subdivided into four families: ST3Gal, ST6Gal, ST6GalNAc and ST8Sia, based on acceptor sugar specificity and glycosidic linkage formed. Despite low overall sequence identity between each sialyltransferase family, all sialyltransferases share four conserved peptide motifs (L, S, III and VS) that serve as hallmarks for the identification of the sialyltransferases. Currently, twenty ...

Supported Au catalysts modified by the addition of low amount of Pd (Au/Pd atomic ratio ≥10), prepared by either codeposition−precipitation (DP) or coimpregnation in excess of solution (IES), result in the formation of bimetallic Au−Pd particles that promote the selective hydrogenation of butadiene in the presence of propene. The DP method appears more appropriate to obtain reproducible and homogeneous bimetallic catalysts with smaller nanoparticles than the IES method, although it does not allow one ...

The neurological manifestations of sleeping sickness in man are attributed to the penetration of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and invasion of the central nervous system by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. The intrinsic rates range from 4.7 to 14.7 nmol m−2 s−1 and decrease as follows: Mo2C>WC>W2C≈WC1−x>MoC1−x. The group VI carbide samples catalyse hydrodehalogenation and dehydrofluorination. ...

Gold supported on ceria or ceria–alumina mixed oxides are very active catalysts for total oxidation of a variety of molecules. Complementary DNA encoding a human Gal(β1‐3)GalNAc α2,3‐sialyltransferase type II (hST3Gal II) was cloned from a CEM T‐cell cDNA library using a 23‐base oligonucleotide probe. The sequence of this probe was established on the basis of a slightly divergent sialylmotif L that was obtained by polymerase chain reaction with degenerate oligonucleotide primers based on the conserved sialylmotif L of mammalian Gal(β1‐3)GalNAc α2,3‐sialyltransferases. It was thus confirmed that a short oligonucleotide probe ...

Oxygen content has always been limited in commercial titanium and titanium alloys due to its propensity to induce a severe ductility loss. Yet, its effect on the macroscopical behavior has never been clearly understood and is still rather unclear considering the wide variability in the literature results. Here, we investigate the tensile properties of α-titanium with oxygen contents ranging from 0.15 to 0.80 weight percent (wt%). While the strain-hardening ability of oxygen is maintained, no ductility ...

Archaeomorphological study shows however that they are not inert spaces but have frequently been modified by human action, sometimes in ways that imply a strong symbolic significance.
