A method for phenetic analysis of karyotype data has been developed for Leishmania populations. Measurement of size difference between chromosomes recognized by a given DNA probe in different isolates led to the formulation of a Chromosome Size Difference Index (CSDI). The method was applied to phenetic analysis of 4 sets of chromosomes--each set being recognized by a different probe--in 37 L. (Viannia) peruviana isolates sampled along a North-South transect through the Peruvian Andes and, in 11 L. ( ...

XYOM, for XY Online Morphometrics, is an online implementation of the geometric morphometric (GM) approach. It is a platform-independent product, and is presented here as an optional alternative software to client side morphometrics software. From the point of view of the user, the interesting features of a web application are: no download, no installation, no configuration, and automatic updating. Because XYOM is accessible through a standard web interface, it is expected to allow an easier and ...

Abstract Wing geometry helps to identify mosquito species, even cryptic ones. On the other hand, temperature has a well‐known effect on insect metric properties. Can such effects blur the taxonomic signal embedded in the wing? Two strains of Aedes albopictus (laboratory and field strain) were examined under three different rearing temperatures (26, 30 and 33 °C) using landmark‐ and outline‐based morphometric approaches. The wings of each experimental line were compared with Aedes aegypti . Both approaches ...

The contribution of lateral forces, vertical load, gravity redistribution and erosion to the origin of mantled gneiss domes in internal zones of orogens remains debated. In the Orlica−Śnieżnik dome (Moldanubian zone, European Variscan belt), the polyphase tectono‐metamorphic history is initially characterized by the development of subhorizontal fabrics associated with medium‐ to high‐grade metamorphic conditions in different levels of the crust. It reflects the eastward influx of a Saxothuringian‐ ...

Abstract Objective To assess patient adherence to unsupervised single‐drug miltefosine treatment for visceral leishmaniasis and to identify the factors influencing adherence. Methods This is a prospective cohort study of 171 patients with V isceral leishmaniasis ( VL ) in three healthcare settings in N epal. Adherence was assessed through pill count, checking of treatment cards and adherence questionnaires, as well as miltefosine concentration measurements at the end of treatment. Poor adherence was ...

The prevalence of chloroquine (CQ) treatment failure and the genotype failure index was determined in four sentinel sites in Burkina Faso. In three sites, the genotype failure index varied between 1.7 and 3, a result confirming the relationship between the Plasmodium falciparum CQ resistance transporter ( Pfcrt ) T76 mutation and CQ resistance. In the remaining site, the genotype failure index was unusually low, 1.1, which was significantly different than that in the other sites ( P < 0.00001). These findings ...

In eukaryotic cells, the mitochondrion is the key organelle for cellular respiration. Mitochondrial proteome analysis is difficult to perform by the classical proteomic approach involving two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE), because this organelle contains a large number of membrane-associated and highly alkaline proteins usually requiring specific treatments to be successfully analyzed. Here, an alternative approach was evaluated and led to the rapid and sensitive identification of ∼35% of ...

This guidance document provides harmonised and flexible methodologies to apply scientific criteria and prioritisation methods for grouping chemicals into assessment groups for human risk assessment of combined exposure to multiple chemicals. In the context of EFSA’s risk assessments, the problem formulation step defines the chemicals to be assessed in the terms of reference usually through regulatory criteria often set by risk managers based on legislative requirements. Scientific criteria such ...

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is considered to be well suited for the treatment of noncirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPHT) because of a usually severe portal hypertension (PHT) and a mild liver failure, but very less data are available.Records of patients referred for TIPS between 2004 and 2015 for NCPHT were reviewed. No patient should have clinical or biological or histological features of cirrhosis.Twenty-five patients with a wide variety of histological lesions (sinusoidal ...

To investigate the cortical integration of attentional stimuli during motor preparation in parkinsonian patients with freezing of gait (FoG, n=12) or without freezing of gait (n=13), and in aged-matched healthy controls (n=13). We hypothesized that interference between attention and action in freezers would be revealed by differences in cortical modulation during this dual task.Attention during step preparation was modulated by means of an auditory oddball discrimination task. EEG oscillations in different ...

We report here on an in situ Raman investigation of stoichiometric and La-deficient LaFeO3 solids along model treatments related to three-way catalysis. Whereas the Raman signature of the stoichiometric compound is only slightly modified by the sequence we have applied, the reversible formation of a new phase based on Fe2IIIO3 in the La-deficient solid was evidenced. This new phase was found to be stabilized under the same experimental conditions which also favor the volumetric expansion of the ...

Although there is evidence that patients who experience major bleeding after an acute coronary event are at higher risk of death in the months after the event, the incidence and impact on outcome of bleeding beyond 1 year of follow-up in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) are largely unknown. The goal of this study was to assess the incidence, source, determinants, and prognostic impact of major bleeding in stable CAD. We prospectively included 4,184 consecutive CAD outpatients who ...
