Advances in medical care for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) have resulted in improved survival and an increased prevalence of cardiomyopathy. Serial echocardiographic surveillance is recommended to detect early cardiac dysfunction and initiate medical therapy. Clinical anecdote suggests that echocardiographic quality diminishes over time, impeding accurate assessment of left ventricular systolic function. Furthermore, evidence-based guidelines for the use of cardiac imaging in DMD, ...

Abstract We report on nine unrelated children fitting a diagnosis of Carey–Fineman–Ziter syndrome (CFZS). All children presented with Möbius sequence, Pierre Robin complex (6/9) or micrognathia, and hypotonia. Some had primary hypoventilation, delayed development, and acral anomalies. The neuropathological investigations performed in two patients showed a combination of dysplastic lesions (neuronal heterotopias) and encephaloclastic changes consisting of small foci of necrosis with microcalcifications. ...

It is widely assumed that decreasing transcription factor DNA-binding affinity reduces transcription initiation by diminishing occupancy of sequence-specific regulatory elements. However, in vivo transcription factors find their binding sites while confronted with a large excess of low-affinity degenerate motifs. Here, using the melanoma lineage survival oncogene MITF as a model, we show that low-affinity binding sites act as a competitive reservoir in vivo from which transcription factors are released ...

Caregiving for ill loved ones can affect sleep quality and quantity. Insufficient sleep has been associated with worse physical and mental health outcomes, and it is known to affect work performance and ability to accomplish necessary tasks. While some research has looked at the sleep of caregivers of loved ones with chronic illness and found that they experience poorer sleep, little is known about the impact of caring for a child with asthma on the caregiver’s sleep and the ways in which their ...

Superficial venous thrombosis (SVT) of the lower extremities is a common ailment seen in outpatient offices of vascular medicine and surgery practices. This study of 60 consecutive outpatients was carried out to examine the incidence of concomitant deep venous thrombosis (DVT), risk factors associated with SVT, recurrence of SVT and=or new DVT, and the role of anticoagulant therapy in the prevention of recurrence. Concomitant SVT and DVT (13%) were significantly less likely to be present in patients ...

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND The School Climate Measure ( SCM ) was developed and validated in 2010 in response to a dearth of psychometrically sound school climate instruments. This study sought to further validate the SCM on a large, diverse sample of Arizona public school adolescents (N = 20,953). METHODS Four SCM domains (positive student‐teacher relationships, academic support, order and discipline, and physical environment) were available for the analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation ...

However, little is known about their effects on prostate cancer cells. We synthesized and evaluated the effects of caffeic acid, CAPE (2) and 18 synthetic derivatives on cell viability and androgen-dependent cell proliferation, ...
