The point availability is the probability that a system is available at time t. As grids need a lot of resources to be really operational, the evolution of their availability with time or depending on a maintenance process is a hot topic. But as grids contain a lot of resources, it is quite difficult to model and solve this problem. Here we advocate a component based description which is associated to a tensor based numerical approach.

The soil environment adjacent to plant roots, termed the rhizosphere, is home to a wide variety of microorganisms that can significantly affect the physiology of nearby plants. Microbes in the rhizosphere can provide nutrients, secrete signaling compounds, and inhibit pathogens. These processes could be manipulated with synthetic biology to enhance the agricultural performance of crops grown for food, energy, or environmental remediation, if methods can be implemented in these nonmodel microbes. ...

Multiscale percolation systems (MPSs) were proposed to study invasion processes in porous media with a large pore size distribution, considering the porous section as a polydisperse structure that modifies its geometrical structure when the scale of observation is changed. Multiscale models are nonregular percolation systems and do not have the following limitations common to classical percolation systems: (i) It is not necessary to choose a particular value for the coordination number Z nor to establish ...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing levels of feed restriction in broilers aged from 35 to 42 days, on the performance, carcass parameters and intensity of lesions at slaughter. A total of 1,225 one-day old chicks were obtained from a commercial hatchery and were grown over a 34-days period (five weeks). At 34 days of age all birds were weighed and redistributed into a completely randomized design to perform the following treatments: control (0% feed restriction), ...

Several legumes have natural ability to associate with nitrogen-fixing bacteria known as rhizobia. The efficiency of this association depends on the plant and bacterial genotype and the edaphoclimatic conditions. Peanut is a tropical legume able to associate with a wide range of rhizobia and the selection of efficient bacteria is important to increase the nitrogen fixation in this crop. In order to investigate the agronomic efficiency of two Bradyrhizobium strains, two peanut genotypes were used ...

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the initial moisture content of soybeans and the drying air temperatures on drying kinetics and grain quality, and find the best mathematical model that fit the experimental data of drying, effective diffusivity and isosteric heat of desorption. The experimental design was completely randomized (CRD), with a factorial scheme (4 x 2), four drying temperatures (75, 90, 105 and 120 ºC) and two initial moisture contents (25 and 19% d.b.), with ...

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of air-drying temperature and initial moisture content on volume shrinkage, physical quality and oil extraction yield of soybean grains. The grains used in this experiment were harvested at two distinct moisture levels of 19 and 25%. Then, these grains were taken to dryness at three different air temperatures of 75 °C, 90 °C and 105 °C, in a forced circulation convection oven of the air. The results showed a drying time reduction with increasing air temperatures. ...

Background and Objective Freezing changes sperm integrity remarkably. Cryopreservation involves cooling, freezing, and thawing and all these contribute to structural damage in sperm, resulting in reduced fertility potential. Low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) could increase energy supply to the cell and cause reactive oxygen species reduction (ROS), contributing to the restoration of oxygen consumption and adenosine triphosphate synthesis (ATP) in the mitochondria. Our goal was to analyze the effects ...

We reported earlier that urate may behave as a pro‐oxidant in Cu 2+ ‐induced oxidation of diluted plasma. Thus, its effect on Cu 2+ ‐induced oxidation of isolated low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) was investigated by monitoring the formation of malondialdehyde and conjugated dienes and the consumption of urate and carotenoids. We show that urate is antioxidant at high concentration but pro‐oxidant at low concentration. Depending on Cu 2+ concentration, the switch between the pro‐ and antioxidant behavior ...

AbstractThe kinetics of several processes involving the potential antioxidant role of urate in physiological systems have been investigated by pulse radiolysis. While the monoanionic urate radical, ·UH-, can be produced directly by oxidation with ·Br-2 or ·OH, it can also be generated by oxidation with the neutral tryptophan radical, ·Trp, with a rate constant of 2 × 107 M-1s-1. This radical, ·UH-, reacts with ·O-2 with a rate constant of 8 × 108 M-1s-1. Also, ·UH- is reduced by flavonoids, quercetin and rutin ...

Abstract In this paper is developed a transparent antenna, bioinspired in ingae edulis mart plants, build in Indio Tin Oxide film, and flexible transparent dielectric of low cost (cellulose acetate), generated by Gielis formula, for wireless local area network application in 5 GHz (5.15–5.85 GHz). The measured bioinspired transparent antenna presented bandwidth of 4.11 GHz (4.50‐8.66 GHz), covering the WLAN band, with maximum gain of 5.44 dBi, and half power beamwidth of 126° at resonance frequency.

We recently reported that, depending on its concentration, urate is either a pro‐ or an antioxidant in Cu 2+ ‐induced low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation. We also previously demonstrated an antioxidant synergy between urate and some flavonoids in the Cu 2+ ‐induced oxidation of diluted serum. As a result, the effect of the flavonoid quercetin on the Cu 2+ ‐induced oxidation of isolated LDL has been studied either in the presence or absence of urate. We demonstrate that, like urate, quercetin alone, ...

Gene editing in large animal models for future applications in translational medicine and food production must be deeply investigated for an increase of knowledge. The mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) is a member of the HMGB subfamily that binds to mtDNA promoters. This gene maintains mtDNA, and it is essential for the initiation of mtDNA transcription. Lately, we generated a new cell line through the disruption of the TFAM gene in bovine fibroblast cells by CRISPR/Cas 9 technology. We ...

The flavonoid quercetin is known to reduce the α-tocopheroxyl radical (˙TocO) and reconstitute α-tocopherol (TocOH). Structurally related polyphenolic compounds, hydroxy-2,3-diarylxanthones (XH), exhibit antioxidant activity which exceeds that of quercetin in biological systems. In the present study repair of ˙TocO by a series of these XH has been evaluated using pulse radiolysis. It has been shown that, among the studied XH, only 2,3-bis(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-9H-xanthen-9-one (XH9) reduces ˙TocO, though ...

In this work, we have investigated the impact, at micro- and macroscales, of the decoupling of the hydrophobization and the coupling activity of silane by pretreating silica with two different silane chemistries. The first one, a mercaptosilane, is the coupling agent that promotes a covalent link between silica and rubber during the sulfur-mediated vulcanization reaction. ...
