The phylogeographic population structure of Mycobacterium tuberculosis suggests local adaptation to sympatric human populations. We hypothesized that HIV infection, which induces immunodeficiency, will alter the sympatric relationship between M. tuberculosis and its human host. To test this hypothesis, we performed a nine-year nation-wide molecular-epidemiological study of HIV–infected and HIV–negative patients with tuberculosis (TB) between 2000 and 2008 in Switzerland. We analyzed 518 TB patients ...

The therapeutic use of Abs in cancer, autoimmunity, transplantation, and other fields is among the major biopharmaceutical advances of the 20th century. Broader use of Ab-based drugs is constrained because of their high production costs and frequent side effects. One promising approach to overcome these limitations is the use of highly diluted Abs, which are produced by gradual reduction of an Ab concentration to an extremely low level. This technology was used to create a group of drugs for the ...

The Brevivalvula section of the grass polyploid complex Pennisetum shows various reproductive systems, apomixis being the most widespread. Haplotype variation of chloroplast DNA was studied in the six morphological taxa (species) of this section by using RFLP analysis in 54 plants corresponding to 14 elementary taxa, each characterized on the basis of morphology and ploidy level. Two additional species, Pennisetum glaucum and P. purpureum, which belong to another section of the same genus, were analysed ...

ABSTRACT Several subtypes of Mycobacterium kansasii have been described, but their respective pathogenic roles are not clear. This study investigated the distribution of subtypes and the pathogenicity of M. kansasii strains ( n = 191) isolated in Switzerland between 1991 and 1997. Demographic, clinical, and microbiological information was recorded from clinical files. Patients were classified as having an infection according to the criteria of the American Thoracic Society. Subtypes were defined by ...

We present a new type of electrically tunable strong coupling between planar metamaterials and epsilon-near-zero modes that exist in a doped semiconductor nanolayer. The use of doped semiconductors makes this strong coupling tunable over a wide range of wavelengths through the use of different doping densities. We also modulate this coupling by depleting the doped semiconductor layer electrically. Our hybrid approach incorporates strong optical interactions into a highly tunable, integrated device ...

An experimental curve of room-temperature band gap versus HgTe layer thickness for HgTe-CdTe superlattices is presented for the first time. The room-temperature experimental results are compared to theoretical results determined using the envelope function approximation. Also a few values of the band gap at 2 K are given and compared to theoretical predictions. A good agreement between experiment and theory is found.

Vascular complications after liver transplantation are relatively rare. Thrombosis of the host-transplant arterial anastomosis is the most frequently encountered vascular complication whereas only a few observations of infected anastomotic aneurysms, often leading to death by massive bleeding or loss of the transplant, have been reported. We report herein the case of a patient with an infected false anastomotic aneurysm of the hepatic artery associated with dissection of the celiac artery following ...

Abstract Background Development of physical literacy, defined as “the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life,” can support children’s physically active behaviors and consequent health benefits. Little research has explored interventions to improve children’s physical literacy, although substantive evidence shows parents play a key role in children’s physically active behaviors and development ...

The Reno-Sparks area of northern Nevada is one of many communities across the globe where water managers are considering the prospect of potable water reuse. Planned potable reuse is the intentional use of highly treated reclaimed to expand local drinking water supplies. Although water managers and city planners increasingly encourage water recycling, potable water reuse remains an uncommon approach to water management that can face stiff opposition from the local public.
