• Sequential oxygen isotope analysis in enamel reveals caprine birth patterns in PPNB Cyprus. • PPNB caprines were breeding outside their wild ancestors’ restricted season. • Autumn/winter births in PPNB caprines echo a similar pattern in traditional Cypriot husbandry. • The distribution of births reflects adaptation to the Mediterranean precipitation regime. • The ability of caprines to quickly adapt to new environments enables potentially fast diffusion of domestic caprines.

Traditional approaches to discovery of selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) have relied on ER binding and cell-based estrogen response element-driven assays to identify compounds that are osteoprotective but nonproliferative in breast and uterine tissues. To discover new classes of potential SERMs, we have employed a cell-free microsphere-based binding assay to rapidly characterize ERalpha interactions with conformation-sensing cofactor or phage display peptides. Peptide profiles of constrained ...

Although both P- and E-selectin are constitutively expressed on bone marrow endothelial cells, their role in the regulation of hematopoiesis has only recently been investigated. We have previously shown that P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-l (PSGL-1/CD162) is expressed by primitive human bone marrow CD34+ cells, mediates their adhesion to P-selectin, and, more importantly, inhibits their proliferation. We now demonstrate that adhesion to E-selectin inhibits the proliferation of human CD34+ cells isolated ...

Abstract Agrobacterium ‐mediated gene transfer, or agroinfiltration, can be a highly efficient method for transforming and inducing transient transgene expression in plant tissue. The technique uses the innate DNA secretion pathway of Agrobacterium tumefaciens to vector a particular plasmid‐encoded segment of DNA from the bacteria to plant cells. Vacuum is often applied to plant tissue submerged in a suspension of A. tumefaciens to improve agroinfiltration. However, the effects of vacuum application ...

Abstract The global analysis and forecast impact of observed humidity has been assessed by means of observing system experiments with the ECMWF 4D‐Var data assimilation system. It is found that humidity data have a significant impact extending into the medium range (5–6 day forecasts), with a marked impact also on the wind and temperature fields. This contradicts some previous studies that have shown insignificant impact of humidity observations in general. The current, greater benefit of the humidity ...

This work aimed to characterize microbial tolerance to 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([C2mim][OAc]), an ionic liquid that has emerged as a novel biomass pretreatment for lignocellulosic biomass. Enrichment experiments performed using inocula treated with [C2mim][OAc] under solid and liquid cultivation yielded fungal populations dominated by Aspergilli. Ionic liquid-tolerant Aspergillus isolates from these enrichments were capable of growing in a radial plate growth assay in the presence of 10% [ ...
