Pavements in cold climates are often subjected to transverse differential heaving. This phenomenon is the result of the more severe frost action under the unprotected road surface. It induces bending stresses in the pavement structure and ultimately causes longitudinal cracking at the pavement surface. A simple model to predict the initiation and the propagation rate of cracking induced by frost heave is proposed. The model is based on mechanistic principles and calibrated using field performance ...

Guy Doré, Jean‐Marie Konrad, Marius Roy,
Frost action is a major cause of pavement deterioration in cold climates. Thermal cracking, differential heaving, and loss of bearing capacity during spring thaw are often identified as the main mechanisms involved. Except for thermal cracking, frost-susceptible subgrade soils are generally considered to be the source of the problems. Field observations suggest that frost action within the pavement granular layers could also contribute to pavement deterioration. Differential freezing conditions ...

With freezing indexes ranging from 1,200 to over 2,000 deg C-days and frost penetration reaching 3 mm under pavement surface, frost action has always been a major concern for pavement engineers in Quebec, Canada. The province's ministry of transportation has thus undertaken a study on frost action in pavements with two main objectives. The first is to revisit the whole approach of pavement design in severe frost conditions and develop a rational pavement design method to mitigate efficiently the ...

Magnetic resonance (MR) provides a non-invasive way to investigate changes in the brain resulting from aging or neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Performing accurate analysis for population studies is challenging because of the interindividual anatomical variability. A large set of tools is found to perform studies of brain anatomy and population analysis (FreeSurfer, SPM, FSL). In this paper we present a newly developed surface-based processing pipeline (MILXCTE) that allows ...

Objective During HIV-1 infection, CD4+ T lymphocytes migrate to immune-reactive lymphoid organs where they are infected by the virus and/or killed by apoptosis on immunoregulatory stimuli—a potential mechanism underlying fatal CD4+ T-cell depletion observed in AIDS. This study seeks to determine the effects of glucocorticoids (GCC) on the activation-induced T-cell apoptosis triggered by HIV-1. Methods CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were purified from HIV-negative donor peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) ...

Abstract Objective . To investigate insulin‐like growth factor 1 (IGF‐1) production in normal and osteoarthritis (OA) chondrocytes and to further examine the role of growth hormone (GH) in adult human cartilage and, in particular, in diseased tissue. Methods . IGF‐1 production was measured with a radioimmunoassay. Binding assay, Northern blot, and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR) techniques were used for GH receptor (GHR) detection. The biological response to GH was estimated via ...

M2 M communication is information exchange between machines and machines without any human interaction. M2 M communication based on cellular network suffers from the extremely large number of devices in service coverage. In cellular network case, the large number of devices lead to communication problem caused by collisions between the senders. In this work we study the collision probability, saturation throughput and packet error rate for the carrier sense multiple access collision avoidance (CSMA/ ...

Abstract: Background: In the concordant hamster‐to‐rat cardiac xenograft model, recipients treated with cobra venom factor for the first 10 days following transplantation and daily with Cyclosporine A (CsA) do not reject their grafts. However, when CsA is withdrawn on day 40, an acute cellular rejection occurs within 4 ± 1 days. Allografts performed in the same conditions are rejected within 18 ± 4 days. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) aims to promote physical and biological regulation strategies that help farmers contain populations of pests (pathogens, animal pests and weeds) and to finally reduce the reliance on pesticides. It is based on the holistic combination of multiple management measures rather than on the sum of single methods, each of them having only small effects on pests reduction. Thus, to analyse the interactions between IPM measures and to evaluate the sustainability of their implementation, ...

Mutations in two genes encoding cell cycle regulatory proteins have been shown to cause familial cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM). About 20% of melanoma-prone families bear a point mutation in the CDKN2A locus at 9p21, which encodes two unrelated proteins, p16INK4a and p14ARF. Rare mutations in CDK4 have also been linked to the disease. Although the CDKN2A gene has been shown to be the major melanoma predisposing gene, there remains a significant proportion of melanoma kindreds linked to 9p21 in ...
