Antidepressants are often considered to be mere placebos despite the fact that meta-analyses are able to rank them. It follows that it should also be possible to rank different placebos, which are all made of sucrose. To explore this issue, which is rather more epistemological than clinical, we designed an unusual meta-analysis to investigate whether the effects of placebo in one situation are different from the effects of placebo in another situation. Published and unpublished studies were searched ...

The purpose of the study was to investigate the possible effect of an environmental organochlorine, dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p′-DDE), on male fertility assessed by main sperm variables, conducted through a case-control study on young men attending the andrology laboratory in the context of infertility investigation in the couple. Blood and semen samples were obtained from 73 young men considered as fertile based on semen analysis (controls) and 82 classified as subfertile or unfertile (cases). ...

Abstract The carcinogenic potential of environmental xenoestrogens (i.e., organochlorines) is a matter of controversy. Their pathogenic role as promoters in breast cancer has been previously suggested. In Europe, despite their prohibition since the ’70s, residues persist in soil and rivers resulting in a widespread contamination of the general population. In this study, we have compared the serum levels of p,p'-1,1-dichloro-2, 2-bis (4-chlorophenyl) ethylene (DDE) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in 231 women ...

Work on human remains and old biological samples is a potential source of contamination by conventional or atypical infectious agents. Similarly, current and future environmental changes are a source of resurgence of ancient epidemic diseases. To what extent are anthropologists sorcerer apprentices (especially those working on ancient samples, i.e. paleo-anthropologists)? Are ancient skeletons, palaeosols and museum objects with a biological component at risk for current populations? Unless there ...

Compound 7, N-(3-phenoxy-4-pyridinyl)trifluoromethanesulfonamide, showed in vitro (whole blood assay) a strong inhibitory activity on the two cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes (IC50(COX-1) = 2.2 μM and IC50(COX-2) = 0.4 μM), being more active but less COX-2-selective than nimesulide. Physicochemical studies and structural analyses indicated that the anionic sulfonamidate species seemed to be the active form of methanesulfonamides, which optimally interacted with the COX enzymes' active sites.

Aims The long-term value of rescue percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction who received thrombolytic therapy but failed to achieve early recanalization of the artery is still debated. This study aimed to compare long-term outcomes after successful thrombolysis vs. systematic attempted rescue PTCA.

In this paper, the binding mode of original pyridinic compounds structurally related to nimesulide, a preferential cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitor, is analyzed by docking simulations in order to understand structure–activity relationships of this family. Structural modifications are proposed to reverse the selectivity of the more active inhibitor of the series characterized by a preferential activity on COX-1. On the basis of these modifications, a new compound with a bromo substituent was designed ...

ABSTRACT Intentional cranial deformations (ICD) have been observed worldwide but are especially prevalent in preColombian cultures. The purpose of this study was to assess the consequences of ICD on three cranial cavities (intracranial cavity, orbits, and maxillary sinuses) and on cranial vault thickness, in order to screen for morphological changes due to the external constraints exerted by the deformation device. We acquired CT‐scans for 39 deformed and 19 control skulls. We studied the thickness ...

Abstract Background The optimal duration of antimicrobial therapy for urinary tract infections (UTIs) in men remains controversial. Methods To compare 7 days to 14 days of total antibiotic treatment for febrile UTIs in men, this multicenter randomized, double-blind. placebo-controlled noninferiority trial enrolled 282 men from 27 centers in France. Men were eligible if they had a febrile UTI and urine culture showing a single uropathogen. Participants were treated with ofloxacin or a third-generation ...

Abstract Background Our study describes the prevalence of transmitted drug resistance (TDR) among 1318 French patients diagnosed at the time of primary HIV-1 infection (PHI) in 2007–12. Methods HIV-1 resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) were characterized using both the 2009 WHO list of mutations and the French ANRS algorithm. A genotypic susceptibility score was estimated for each first-line recommended ART combination. Results Patients were mainly MSM (72.6%). Non-B variants were identified in 33. ...

The title compound, C12H12N2O3S, is a strict pyridine analogue of nimesulide, a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2. The structure is characterized by a pyridinium ring with a deprotonated sulfonamide group. An intermolecular charge-assisted hydrogen bond between these two groups is observed within the crystal packing, linking the molecules into an infinite chain running along the b-axis direction.

Intravenous benzylpenicillin is the gold-standard treatment for neurosyphilis, but it requires prolonged hospitalisation. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of ceftriaxone compared with benzylpenicillin in the treatment of neurosyphilis. We did a retrospective multicentre study including patients with neurosyphilis who were treated at one of eight tertiary care centres in France, from Jan 1, 1997, to Dec ...

Cannabidiol (CBD) has multiple therapeutic benefits that need to be maximized by optimizing its bioavailability. Numerous formulations are therefore being developed and their pharmacokinetics need to be studied, requiring analytical methods and data from intravenous administration. As CBD is susceptible to hepatic metabolism, the requirement of any method is to quantify metabolites such as 7-COOH-CBD. We demonstrated that CBD and 7-COOH-CBD could be simultaneously and correctly quantified in piglet ...
