We prove a new theorem on the impossibility of combining space-time and internal symmetries in any but a trivial way. The theorem is an improvement on known results in that it is applicable to infinite-parameter groups, instead of just to Lie groups. This improvement is gained by using information about the $S$ matrix; previous investigations used only information about the single-particle spectrum. We define a symmetry group of the $S$ matrix as a group of unitary operators which turn one-particle ...

The light-cone analysis of deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering is extended to non-spin-averaged scattering. Scaling is deduced for the spin-dependent structure functions ${M}^{2}\ensuremath{\nu}{G}_{1}$ and $M{\ensuremath{\nu}}^{2}{G}_{2}$. The connection between moments of the scaling functions and matrix elements of operators in the operator-product expansion is described in detail and leads to two sum rules for the scaling functions when the quark light-cone algebra of Fritzsch and Gell-Mann ...

A model of mesons composed of a quark, an antiquark, and a gluon is proposed. The binding of the constituents is provided by a confining linear potential between the gluon and the quarks. The lowest states of the model are described, and their relative masses evaluated, for the case of heavy (charmed) quarks, i.e., $c\overline{c}g$ states.

The Coloumb field set up by a classical Yang-Mills particle is shown to be unstable above a critical coupling strength. The instability is related to color screening and represents a classical phase transition. Possible connections with the confinement problem are discussed.

Classical Coulomb-type configurations of Yang-Mills fields coupled to external sources (charges) are described and discussed. They are shown to be stable against small classical fluctuations in the fields if the Yang-Mills coupling is sufficiently small. In developing the stability analysis, massless charged scalar fields in the presence of a weak Coulomb potential are also shown to be stable to small field fluctuations.

Working within a limited Fock-space approximation (LFSA), we argue that if the running coupling constant of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) exceeds a critical value of order 1 the vacuum becomes a condensate of quark-antiquark pairs. To evaluate the critical coupling constant we use a Mellin-transform technique which is first illustrated with a Schr\"odinger equation problem. We then apply it to scalar and spinor QED, as well as to QCD, using the LFSA.

If the effective qq interaction strength due to gluon exchange becomes at least moderately strong beyond some distance g2/4π > 98, the perturbative vacuum becomes unstable to the creation of color singlet qq pairs, which indicates that the true vacuum contains a condensate of such pairs. We analyze the condensation by a coherent state variational procedure modeled after the BCS superconductor, and show that this method is equivalent to a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation to the Schwinger- ...

The main content of this book is an introduction to Yang-mills fields and the standard model of particle physics. A concise introduction to quarks is provided, with a discussion of the representations of SU(3). The standard model is presented in detail, including such topics as the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, chiral symmetry breaking and the omega-vacuum. Theoretical topics of a more general nature include path integrals, topological solitons, renormalization group, effective potentials, the axial ...

A recently proposed model for dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD is extended and developed for the calculation of pion and chiral symmetry breaking parameters. The pion is explicitly realized as a massless Goldstone boson and as a bound state of the constituent quarks. We compute, in the limit of exact chiral symmetry, MQ, the constituent quark mass ƒπ the pion decay coupling, 〈uu〉, the constituent quark loop density, μπ2/mq, the ratio of the Goldstone boson mass squared to the bare quark ...

The magnitude of the gluon contribution to the proton spin induced by the triangle anomaly diagram in the quark axial current is estimated by means of a lattice QCD simulation (in the temporal axial gauge) of the polarized-proton matrix element of the anomalous current 〈ps\ensuremath{\Vert}${\mathit{K}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}$\ensuremath{\Vert}ps〉. The result of the simulation is that the fractional contribution of the gluon anomaly to the proton spin, -(3\ensuremath{\alpha}/2\ensuremath{\pi})\ ...

The Gribov ambiguity in lattice gauge theory is discussed. The Landau gauge and the finite-temperature temporal gauge (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\partial}}}_{4}$${\mathit{A}}_{4}$=0) are formulated as maximization conditions on the lattice. This formulation is shown to eliminate Gribov copies from the temporal gauge. The possibility that it also eliminates copies from the Landau gauge is discussed. An algorithm which will eliminate Gribov copies from the lattice implementation of the Landau gauge, in case ...

A Monte Carlo calculation of the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge in SU(3) lattice gauge theory is described. The results of calculations at β=5.6(200 43×8 lattices), β=5.8(400 43×10 lattices), and β=6.0(100 43×8 lattices) indicate that the gluon propagator resembles a massive particle propagator with asymptotic mass near 600 MeV.

The photon propagator in the Landau gauge is calculated for a U(1) lattice gauge theory. In the confined, strong coupling phase, the propagator resembles that of a massive particle. In the weak coupling phase, the propagator is that of a massless particle. An abrupt change occurs at the transition point. The results are compared to simulations of the gluon propagator in SU(3) lattice gauge theory.

The Landau gauge gluon propagator at finite temperature above and below the deconfinement transition is measured using lattice Monte Carlo simulation. The color electric and magnetic masses are determined. The most striking result of the calculation is that the time component of the gluon field appears to acquire a vacuum expected value in the deconfined region.

We construct the Isgur-Wise limit of QCD in a form appropriate for measurement by lattice-gauge-theory techniques. The coordinate-space fermion propagator in the presence of a background gauge field has a systematic expansion in powers of the inverse quark mass about the Isgur-Wise limit. The formulation permits a calculation of heavy-quark processes even when the momentum transfers are much larger than the inverse lattice spacing. Applications include semileptonic heavy-quark decay and scattering ...

We review specification of the lattice Landau gauge and the procedure for calculating the gluon propagator on the lattice. We trace the evolution of lattice simulations over the past dozen years, emphasizing how the improvement in ...
