Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), also known as Anterior Knee Pain, is a common cause of recurrent or chronic knee pain. The etiology is considered to be multifactorial but is not completely understood. At the current time the leading theory is that pathomechanics in the patellofemoral joint leads to PFPS. Traditionally, conservative treatment has focused on improving strength and timing in the quadriceps muscles. In recent years, evidence has been accumulating to support the importance of hip ...

This study examined the effect of two different intense exercise training regimens on skeletal muscle ion transport systems, performance, and metabolic response to exercise. Thirteen subjects performed either sprint training [ST; 6-s sprints (n = 6)], or speed endurance training [SET; 30-s runs approximately 130% Vo(2 max), n = 7]. Training in the SET group provoked higher (P < 0.05) plasma K(+) levels and muscle lactate/H(+) accumulation. Only in the SET group was the amount of the Na(+)/H(+) exchanger isoform ...

This study examines lactate and K + fluxes from muscle to blood during and after intense exercise. Ten men performed exhaustive dynamic exercise (mean load 65 W, mean duration 3.18 min) with the knee extensors of one leg. The mean lactate efflux was 15.5 (range 8.9–24.0) mmol min ‐1 at exhaustion, and it was linearly related to the lactate gradient. A linear relationship was also obtained if the H + gradient was taken into account. Muscle pH decreased from 7.14 at rest to 6.71 (range 6.50–6.87) at exhaustion. ...

In healthy adults insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I levels do not differ between males and females, whereas spontaneous growth hormone (GH) secretion is approximately twofold higher in females. Untreated GH-deficient (GHD) women exhibit lower IGF-I levels compared with men and the increase in serum IGF-I during GH replacement is also significantly less. These data suggest a resistance to GH in women, which in healthy subjects is compensated for by increased GH secretion. Administration of oral oestrogen ...

Summary Background Female adrenal insufficiency implicates reduced production of the adrenal androgen precursor dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and low androgen levels. Oral DHEA restores androgen deficit but the clinical implications and safety of substitution therapy is uncertain. A putative DHEA receptor in vascular endothelium has been described and in vitro studies have shown involvement of DHEA in NO dependent pathways. Aim To evaluate effects of DHEA substitution on cardiovascular parameters. ...

Objective and design : Compared with their male counterparts, healthy females secrete more growth hormone (GH) and those with GH-deficiency have lower insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) levels and are less responsive to GH substitution. To test whether this gender difference is related to sex hormones we measured androgen status and IGF-I related parameters in 38 hypopituitary women (mean (range) age 41.5 (20–58) years) during continued GH substitution as compared with a control group of 38 healthy women ...

In addition, such observations are affected by a non-deterministic observation error (noise). We investigate the application of numerical bifurcation analysis for studying the solution set of such noise contaminated zero problems, which is highly relevant in the context of equation-free analysis (coarse grained analysis) and bifurcation analysis in experiments, and develop specialized ...
