The controlled growth of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) over surfaces has been investigated using a variety of surface analytical techniques. The use of microcontact printing to prepare surfaces, patterned with regions capable of nucleating the growth of MOFs, has been explored by employing copper-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) to pattern silicon wafers with carboxylic acids, a functional group that has been shown to nucleate the growth of MOFs on surfaces. Upon subjecting the patterned ...

Sapphire fibers grown using the Saphikon EFG technique have proven to be effective delivery systems for Erbium:YAG and Erbium:YSGG laser energy. A special emphasis has been given to the hard tissue dental application following the FDA approval of this procedure in May of 1997. A range of sensor applications also utilize these EFG sapphire fibers. Through the latter half of 1997, Saphikon has successfully transitioned the process from a research/pilot scale level to high volume production. Fiber ...

Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is a promising earth-abundant semiconductor for photovoltaic applications. Developing an understanding of the p-type conduction mechanism is vital to optimize the material. We have used a reactive magnetron sputtering system to fabricate Cu2O thin films. The bandgap, refractive index, mobility, density of hole, and electrical conductivity in the films have also been investigated. Our work shows that the films fabricated under nitrogen-rich condition exhibit wide bandgaps and ...

In this study, SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ thin film phosphors were deposited on Si (1 0 0) substrates using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The films were deposited at different substrate temperatures in the range of 40–700 °C. The structure, morphology and topography of the films were determined by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Jeremiah J. Castle, Kyla Stepp,

While research in media and politics has long stressed the importance of television, the political impact of movies has largely been ignored. However, a small body of literature suggests that both political docudramas and popular films may have the capacity to change the issue attitudes of viewers. Building on that work, this paper examines the potential for selective exposure in movie viewership. We develop a theory that there is large-scale sorting into popular movies rooted in social identity ...

Jeremiah Kelleher,

Some books understate their objectives, but most make relatively extravagant claims. Dr Swischuk, in the preface to this, the second edition of his book on plain film interpretation in congenital heart disease, states his objective to be "to provide a primer for the interpretation and understanding of the plain film roentgenographic findings in congenital heart disease." I think he is too modest. This is a fine comprehensive review of the subject and contains a large amount of useful information. ...

Photoinduced transient spectroscopy (PITS) was used to measure the persistent photoconductive (PPC) response in n-type separation by implanted oxygen (SIMOX) film resistors. A broadband, single-shot, flashlamp-pumped dye laser pulse was used to photoexcite interband electrons in the film, and the excess carrier population decay was measured at temperatures in the 60–220-K range. The PPC signals exhibit nonexponential character and the conductivity transients are recorded as a function of temperature ...

We describe the use of the laser ablation of microparticle aerosol process to deposit patterned thick films of Ag by impacting nanoparticles with a mean size of 6 nm at high velocities and systematically study the effects of varying the nanoparticle impact velocity, while fixing the nanoparticle size. A positive relationship between impact velocity and relative density of the deposits is observed, but it is shown that the geometry of the deposits also influences the deposit density, with taller, ...

During the past several years attempts have been made to grow thick epitaxial films of PbS, PbTe, PbSe, and their alloys with tin on alkali halide substrates. The thickest films which have been achieved using conventional evaporation techniques were limited to 10–15 μ m. We have developed a quasiequilibrium system which has yielded thick films of Pb1−xSnxTe ranging up to 328 μm. When combined with appropriate substrate preparations, this technique yields films having optical quality surfaces and ...
