The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of NOx emissions in the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's (TCEQ) State Implementation Plan (SIP) modeling inventories of the southeastern U.S. We used retrieved satellite tropospheric NO2 columns from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) together with NO2 columns from the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx) to make top–down NOx emissions estimates using the mass balance method. Two different top–down NOx emissions estimates ...

Morel-Lavallee lesions (MLL) are rare, closed degloving injuries caused by trauma that delivers a shearing force to the soft tissue most commonly of the hip. If not treated in the acute and subacute setting these lesions are often complicated by re- accumulation of fluid, infection, or chronic pain. We present a unique case of a recurrent, massive medial knee/thigh MLL in which proper treatment was delayed due to initial diagnosis of a quadriceps contusion. We describe the ultrasound and magnetic ...

Jeremiah Johnson,

Mask-RCNN is a recently proposed state-of-the-art algorithm for object detection, object localization, and object instance segmentation of natural images. In this paper, it is demonstrated that Mask-RCNN can be used to perform highly effective and efficient automatic segmentations of a wide range of microscopy images of cell nuclei, for a variety of cells acquired under a variety of conditions. In addition, it is shown that a cyclic learning rate regime allows effective training of a Mask-RCNN model ...

Abstract A simple empirical equation has been obtained which relates both the shape and the size of the fracture zones to the stress distribution under which failure occurred. The relationship is demonstrated for the hackle boundary on soda-lime-silica glass specimens broken in bending. A possible physical interpretation is discussed in terms of the energetics of crack propagation.

A semi-quantitative determination of the distribution of internal flaws in precursor polymer fibre has led to a prediction of internal flaw frequency in 'Acrilan' carbon fibres. Using specialised techniques of fibre etching and fractography it has been shown that when internal flaws occur within the test gauge length and cause fracture then carbon fibre strength is lowered. It is concluded that internal polymer flaws are operative in restricting strength of the carbonised fibre and that complete ...

William‐Philip Jones, Jeremiah Johnson,

The achievement of higher strengths for carbon fibres depends on the elimination of internal and surface flaws which are responsible for the current limit on tensile strength and the wide dispersion about the mean value. Meanwhile to determine the strength of the material between flaws, small volume tests have been conducted using the elastica method. These tests for PAN based 1000°C fibre have indicated that this strength would be in the neighbourhood of 106 psi in the absence of gross flaws. The ...

The mechanical characteristics of a fibre-resin composite depend primarily on the mechanical properties of the combined materials, the surface of the fibre, the nature of the fibre-resin bonding as well as the mode of stress transfer at the interface. These two last points are related to the surface properties of the fibres. The various types of bonding that may occur between fibrous materials (carbon, glass and organic fibres) and organic polymers, including the relevant theories, are briefly reviewed. ...

During the 2000 Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS) and 2006 Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS II) field experiments, aircraft measured ozone concentrations upwind, across, and downwind of the Houston and Dallas urban areas. Background ozone transported into Houston contributed, on average, approximately 50% and 66% of the total ozone on 8‐h ozone exceedance days investigated by aircraft flights during TexAQS and TexAQS II, respectively. Analysis of a flight over Dallas on one exceedance day showed that ...
