An investigation of the structure of the nitrogen dioxide molecule has been made by the electron diffraction method. The interpretation of the photographs, which showed rings extending to values of q of nearly 100(q = 40/λ sinτ/2), leads to the following structural parameter values: N–O = 1.20±0.02A, <O–N–O = 132±3°. These values are discussed briefly and compared with those obtained by other methods.

Dimethyltrisulfide (CH3)2S3 has been investigated by the electron diffraction method. The molecule was found to have the chain configuration, with the following interatomic distances and angles: C–H=1.09A (assumed), C–S=1.78±0.04A, S–S=2.04A, ±0.02A, ∠H–C–S=112° (assumed), ∠S–S–S=104°±5°, and ∠C–S–S=104°±5°. The results also suggest that the C–S bonds oscillate with rather large amplitude about a mean position approximately 106° out of the plane of the three sulfur atoms.

Accurate values of the two parameters in the structure of crystalline hydrazinium dichloride have been determined by the x-ray diffraction method, with the use of one and two dimensional Fourier syntheses. The N–N separation in this crystal is 1.42A, and is equal to that in hydrazinium difluoride. This N–N distance is 0.05A shorter than in gaseous hydrazine. Each chloride ion forms hydrogen bonds with three nitrogen atoms, the structure consisting of a three dimensional network of N–H···Cl bonds. ...

The structure of histidine hydrochloride monohydrate has been refined by three-dimensional least-squares methods. The amino acid part of the molecule is in the zwitter ion form; the imidazole ring is positively charged. The distances in the imidazole ring, combined with some previous results, are satisfactorily interpreted with the valence bond theory, and imply a carbon-nitrogen double-bond distance of 1.265 /~.All available hydrogen atoms form hydrogen bonds.

The allotropic form of sulphur first discovered by Engel1 has been variously termed Engel's sulphur, Sɛ, Sρ, Sϕ, trigonal sulphur, and rhombohedral sulphur. The molecule was shown to be hexameric by Aten2. Friedel3 found the crystals were hexagonal prisms terminated by a flat rhombohedron. Although these crystals are largely converted to a mixture of plastic and orthorhombic sulphur an hour or so after they have been exposed to air or X-rays, Frondel and Whitfield4 were able to determine the hexagonal ...
