Self-association in water of biologically significant carbohydrate molecules is a controversial topic due to the strong solvation of these molecules in this solvent and the difficulty to experimentally detect these very weak intermolecular forces by biophysical techniques. Herein we report the tremendous ability of amphiphilic carbohydrate molecules to form complex three-dimensional architectures. We have experimentally observed the 3D self-assembly into multilayers of disaccharide neoglycolipid ...

Native valve endocarditis in drug-user patients had a microbiology, a frequency of involvement of different cardiac valves, and a prognosis that differ from those in non-drug users. A retrospective study of native valve endocarditis cases in intravenous drug users diagnosed from 1985 to 1999 in our institution was performed to analyze the inhospital mortality of drug users with native valve endocarditis and to identify factors predictive of mortality. All patients fulfilled the Duke's criteria for ...

Splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) is considered to be an indolent extranodal B-cell lymphoma. Despite its low aggressivity, histologic progression has been described in sporadic reports, although the frequency, characteristics, and underlying molecular abnormalities of this phenomenon are largely unknown. We review here the clinical, morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features of a series of 12 SMZL cases that showed progression to large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL). The most frequent location ...

Electrons feed into the mitochondrial electron transport chain (mETC) from NAD- or FAD-dependent enzymes. A shift from glucose to fatty acids increases electron flux through FAD, which can saturate the oxidation capacity of the dedicated coenzyme Q (CoQ) pool and result in the generation of reactive oxygen species. To prevent this, the mETC superstructure can be reconfigured through the degradation of respiratory complex I, liberating associated complex III to increase electron flux via FAD at the ...

ABSTRACT Pseudomonas aeruginosa , a major cause of nosocomial and chronic infections, is considered a paradigm of antimicrobial resistance development. However, the evolutionary trajectories of antimicrobial resistance and the impact of mutator phenotypes remain mostly unexplored. Therefore, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed in lineages of wild-type and mutator (Δ mutS ) strains exposed to increasing concentrations of relevant antipseudomonal agents. WGS provided a privileged perspective of ...

In recent years, symptoms of vein yellowing and leaf roll in pepper crops associated with the presence of poleroviruses (genus Polerovirus, family Luteoviridae) have been emerging in many countries worldwide. Spain was the first country in Europe where the yellowing disease of pepper was observed. In this work, a polerovirus isolate from Spain that infects pepper and has been shown to be transmitted by the aphid Aphis gossyppii (Spain-Almería 2-2013) was sequenced and compared with isolates from Japan, ...

TEM analysis of microstructures and mechanisms related to alteration and deformation in igneous biotites was carried out on plagioclase-rich dykes from the ultrabasic Ronda massif (Betic Cordilleras, Spain). Compositional data for biotite and chlorite are used to establish the mass transfer of the alteration reaction, here considered as Al-conservative. Crystal defects -such as wavy layers and edge dislocation commonly occur during the early stages of chloritization. Deformation microstructures reveal ...

Although perovskite solar cells have demonstrated impressive efficiencies in research laboratories (above 25%), there is a need for developing experimental procedures to fabricate solar cells under ambient conditions to substantially decrease manufacturing costs. Nevertheless, to achieve efficient and highly stable devices in these conditions, the moisture level in the atmosphere must be monitored. Relative humidity (RH) has classically been the parameter of choice; however, in this work, we show ...

Four supernumerary chromosome segments showing different locations in the chromosomes and different C-banding reactions are studied in three grasshopper species in relation with chiasma distribution in the bivalents which carry them. The presence of any of these extra segments leads to a chiasma redistribution in the carrier bivalents, so that such a chiasma is formed preferentially in the furthest chromosome regions from the extra segment. This effect of the four supernumerary segments is independent ...

An 863-base-pair DNA fragment containing the fosfomycin resistance gene from transposon Tn2921 was sequenced. Analysis of the sequence revealed the presence of a single open reading frame that encoded the FOS polypeptide of 16 kilodaltons from Tn2921. Minicell fractionation studies showed that the FOS protein was located in the bacterial cytoplasm.

Tomato yellow leaf curl disease (TYLCD) causes severe damage to tomato crops worldwide. The deployment of host-plant resistance is the most desirable mean to control this disease. However, some concerns exist because it may place a selection pressure on the virus. Field and experimental data are provided which suggest that the use of TYLCD resistance in tomato crops might have contributed to the emergence of tomato yellow leaf curl virus in the TYLCD-associated virus population, a virus species that ...

Viral diseases occur wherever sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas ) is cultivated and because this crop is vegetatively propagated, accumulation and perpetuation of viruses can become a major constraint for production. Up to 90 % reductions in yield have been reported in association with viral infections. About 20 officially accepted or tentative virus species have been found in sweet potato and other Ipomoea species. They include three species of begomoviruses (genus Begomovirus , family Geminiviridae ) whose ...

RNA viruses within a host exist as dynamic distributions of closely related mutants and recombinant genomes. These closely related mutants and recombinant genomes, which are subjected to a continuous process of genetic variation, competition, and selection, act as a unit of selection, termed viral quasispecies. Characterization of mutant spectra within hosts is essential for understanding viral evolution and pathogenesis resulting from the cooperative behavior of viral mutants within viral quasispecies. ...

A G banding technique combining trypsin and hot saline treatments was used to analyze the chromosomes of two grasshopper species, Eyprepocnemis plorans and Locusta migratoria, both of which contain both standard and supernumerary heterochromatin. Although this technique does not produce G bands like those in mammalian chromosomes, it serves to characterize heterochromatic regions whose nature has been inferred from other banding techniques (C, N, CMA, and DAPI banding). The light regions revealed ...

An antiserum against polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (In-Cn) was used to detect double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) by several serological techniques. DsRNA was readily detected by indirect ELISA (ELISA-I) and dot immunobinding assay (DIA). Addition of the antigen to poly-L-lysine-precoated plates and blocking with uncreamed milk powder allowed detection levels of 100 pg.ml-1 In-Cn by ELISA-I. Concentrations as low as 1 ng.ml-1 were detected by DIA using polyvinyliden difluoride (PVDF) membranes. Detection capacity ...
