Pseudomonas aeruginosa metabolizes pyocyanin, a redox molecule related to diverse biological activities. Culture conditions for the production of pyocyanin in a defined medium were optimized using a statistical design and response surface methodology. The obtained conditions were replicated using as substrate an alkaline residual liquid of cooked maize and its by-products. The untreated effluent (raw nejayote, RN) was processed to obtain a fraction without insoluble solids (clarified fraction, CL), ...

This paper presents a procedure for making facetted mirrors to use in linear Fresnel reflectors, considering the design of the transversal geometry, materials, and structure configuration. Four different assemblies of the structure that supports and shapes the mirror are documented and evaluated. An assembly that implies a curved, pleated aluminum rectangular plate with a thin silvered-glass mirror vacuum glued to the plate is defined as the optimal. The geometrical quality of the chosen mirror ...

Conventional dendritic cells (cDCs) are divided into the following different subtypes: cDC1, which promotes a Th1 response, and cDC2, which stimulates a Th2 and Th17 response. These cells have not been characterized in porcine lymphoid tissues. DEC205 is a receptor that increases antigen presentation and allows DCs to cross-present antigens. The objectives of this work were to characterize cDCs subsets in the tonsil, submaxillary and mesenteric lymph nodes and spleen lymphoid tissues and to determine ...

Abstract F usarium species belonging to the F usarium fujikuroi species complex ( FFSC ) are associated with maize in northern Mexico and cause F usarium ear and root rot. In order to assess the diversity of FFSC fungal species involved in this destructive disease in Sinaloa, Mexico, a collection of 108 fungal isolates was obtained from maize plants in 2007–2011. DNA sequence analysis of the calmodulin and elongation factor 1α genes identified four species: Fusarium verticillioides , F. nygamai , F. andiyazi ...

To analyse the relative effect of the risk factors related to fetal growth retardation (FGR) in the central area of Spain. This is a case-control survey of 370 full-term gestations. Of the 370 women, 185 were diagnosed with intrauterine growth retardation, and 185 were in the normal group. All came from a central region of Spain. We took into account 25 possible risk factors. In the FGR group we found 12 risk factors with statistical significance in the univariate analysis (tobacco, drugs, low pre-pregnancy ...

Oxytocinase has been reported to hydrolyse the peptide hormone oxytocin (OT). We have previously described changes in oxytocinase activity in human breast cancer, where a highly significant increase occurred in tumoral tissue. In the present work, we analysed oxytocinase activity in serum of rats with breast cancer induced by N-methyl-nitrosourea (NMU). We also correlated these data with the number and size of tumors and the body weight of the animals to evaluate the putative value of this activity ...

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is the most important disease affecting the swine industry worldwide. Although monocytes and macrophages, especially tissue-resident and alveolar macrophages, are the primary target of PRRSV, monocyte- and bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DCs) are also susceptible to PRRSV infection. It has been shown that lung DCs cannot be infected with PRRSV, but the response and susceptibility of bona fide conventional DC subtypes (cDCs; cDC1 and cDC2) ...

Copper mining and other extractive industries in the Atacama Desert have exerted pressure on water resources, with dramatic socio-environmental effects. The drying-out of the San Pedro de Inacaliri river basin is a paradigmatic case of this situation. Indigenous communities that used to graze their livestock in the area have seen the utter degradation of the ecosystems which have sustained their activities since time immemorial. In this article, we aim to contribute to the growing literature on ...

Our objective was to determine prevalence of glucocorticoid insufficiency with the 10 microg cosyntropin test and the level of the HHA-A defect. One hundred and four HIV-infected patients underwent the 10 microg cosyntropin test. State and function of breast depend on an endocrinological balance, the upsetting of which can be a factor favorable to the development of cancer. Enkephalins (ENK) have been considered as a particular form of adaptation to defense to the organism against neoplastic processes. However, ENK may modify the endocrine functions of glands such as the ovary or the thyroid through the hypothalamus–pituitary axis, acting direct or indirectly as endocrine, paracrine or autocrine stimulatory growth factors. ...

Previous results obtained by us showed a decrease in human breast cancer Pcp activity, suggesting that this enzyme activity or its putative substrates may play a mayor role in breast cancer pathogenesis. The aim of the present work is to analyse serum Pcp ...

An important subject that arises in the position control of robot manipulators is the local or global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system equilibrium point, especially when an integral action is added to the control loop. For rigid joint robot manipulators, global nonlinear proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers have been introduced few years ago. However, for the case of flexible joint robot manipulators, the design and analysis of such nonlinear PID laws is much more challenging. ...

ABSTRACTThis paper is based on a multiple case study of schools which have been identified as improving their performance for about a decade. We proposed different criteria by which to characterize and study these improvement processes and, by applying them to our sample, we elaborated a typology of school improvement trajectories: we identified 4 different trajectories of school improvement. We called the first type restricted improvement because at its center is the management of processes that ...

Objective: Pineal function has been considered particularly as a neuroendocrine modulator in hormone responsive tumors, like the hormone-dependent mammary tumors. The complexity of the gland function, moreover, is denoted by the presence of a local renin-angiotensin-system (RAS) that regulates melatonin biosynthesis. Classically, angiotensin II (Ang II) has been considered as the effector peptide of the RAS, but Ang II is not the only active peptide. Several of its degradation products, including ...

Mosquito-borne viruses are a growing global threat. Initial viral inoculation occurs in the skin via the mosquito 'bite', eliciting immune responses that shape the establishment of infection and pathogenesis. Here we assess the cutaneous innate and adaptive immune responses to controlled Aedes aegypti feedings in humans living in Aedes-endemic areas. In this single-arm, cross-sectional interventional study (trial registration #NCT04350905), we enroll 30 healthy adult participants aged 18 to 45 years ...

Many endemic poverty-associated diseases, such as malaria and leishmaniasis, are transmitted by arthropod vectors. Pathogens must interact with specific molecules in the vector gut, the microbiota, and the vector immune system to survive and be transmitted. The vertebrate host, in turn, is infected when the pathogen and vector-derived factors, such as salivary proteins, are delivered into the skin by a vector bite. Here, we review recent progress in our understanding of the biology of pathogen transmission ...

The feeding behavior of sand flies is intimately connected to vector competence and success of Leishmania transmission. In the sand fly, a postinfected blood meal prevents loss of parasites and promotes transmissible infections. More blood meals increase sand fly infectiousness through retroleptomonad parasites. In addition, prolonged host bleeding induces heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in macrophages, which dampens inflammation and promotes disease tolerance. Sand fly gut microbiota is critical to Leishmania ...

Guinea pigs exposed to multiple infestations with Ixodes scapularis ticks develop acquired resistance to ticks, which is also known as tick immunity. The I. scapularis salivary components that contribute to tick immunity are likely multifactorial. An anticoagulant that inhibits factor Xa, named Salp14, is present in tick saliva and is associated with partial tick immunity. A tick bite naturally releases tick saliva proteins into the vertebrate host for several days, which suggests that the mode ...
