We compare terahertz-pulsed imaging (TPI) with transverse microradiography (TMR) and microindentation to measure remineralization of artificial caries lesions. Lesions are formed in bovine enamel using a solution of 0.1 M lactic acid/0.2% Carbopol C907 and 50% saturated with hydroxyapatite adjusted to pH 5.0. The 20-day experimental protocol consists of four 1 min treatment periods with dentifrices containing 10, 675, 1385, and 2700 ppm fluoride, a 4-h/day acid challenge, and, for the remaining time, ...

Our body habitat-associated microbial communities are of intense research interest because of their influence on human health. Because many studies of the microbiota are based on the same bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene target, they can, in principle, be compared to determine the relative importance of different disease/physiologic/developmental states. However, differences in experimental protocols used may produce variation that outweighs biological differences. By comparing 16S rRNA gene ...

Community rescue occurs when a community that experiences lethal stress persists only through the spread of rare types, either genotypes or species, resistant to the stress. Rescue interacts with trophic structure because physical stress experienced by a focal assemblage within the community may also be experienced by its predators and prey. In general, trophic structure will facilitate rescue only when a stress has a less severe effect on a focal assemblage than on its predators. In other circumstances, ...

Programmable surfaces, which can be instructed to alter their shape or texture, may one day serve as a platform for tangible interfaces and adaptive environments. But so far, these structures have been constrained in scale by a challenging fabrication process, as the numerous constituent actuators must be built and assembled individually. We look towards emerging trends in mechanical engineering and consider an alternate framework --- layer-driven design, which enables the production of dynamic, discretely- ...

Our understanding of the vast collection of microbes that live on and inside us (microbiota) and their collective genes (microbiome) has been revolutionized by culture-independent "metagenomic" techniques and DNA sequencing technologies. Most of our microbes live in our gut, where they function as a metabolic organ and provide attributes not encoded in our human genome. Metagenomic studies are revealing shared and distinctive features of microbial communities inhabiting different humans. A central ...

Depression in patients with diabetes is associated with poorer adherence and worse health outcomes, however treating depression may help improve these outcomes. The present systematic review identified published papers to evaluate treatments for depression in patients with diabetes. Seventeen studies that met criteria were identified, indicating that psychosocial interventions, particularly cognitive-behavior therapy, anti-depressant medications, and collaborative care are effective in the treatment ...

The economics of producing cellulosic ethanol using loblolly pine, natural mixed hardwood, Eucalyptus, corn stover, and switchgrass as feedstocks was simulated in Aspen Plus using the thermochemical process via indirect gasification and mixed alcohol synthesis developed by NREL. Abstract Background Understanding the normal temporal variation in the human microbiome is critical to developing treatments for putative microbiome-related afflictions such as obesity, Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease and malnutrition. Sequencing and computational technologies, however, have been a limiting factor in performing dense time series analysis of the human microbiome. Here, we present the largest human microbiota time series analysis to date, covering two individuals at four ...

Purpose To retrospectively evaluate patients with 6-year minimum follow-up after submuscular transposition of the ulnar nerve for primary entrapment. Methods From 1992 to 2005, 142 patients were treated surgically for ulnar neuropathy at the elbow by 2 senior surgeons using a technique that preserved nerve vascularity. A total of 99 cases were eligible, and 82 elbows in 76 patients, average age 48 years, were followed for at least 6 years (average, 8.3 y). Thirty-two (42%) were male, and the dominant limb ...

Tobacco-related chronic lung diseases are characterized by alterations in lung architecture leading to decreased lung function. Knowledge of the exact mechanisms involved in tobacco-induced tissue remodeling and inflammation remains incomplete. Global social and economic changes, alongside climate change, are affecting the operating environment for agriculture, leading to efforts to increase production and yields, typically through the use of agrochemicals like pesticides and fertilizers, expanded irrigation, and changes in seed varieties.
