Abstract Insulin receptors from chicken liver and brain were studied following alterations in the nutritional state. Chickens were either fasted for 48 h, fasted for 48 h and then refed for 24 h, or fed a regular diet ad libitum. 125I-Porcine insulin binding was significantly elevated in liver membranes from the fasted animals and lowered in refed chickens when compared to preparations from ad libitum fed chickens. These changes in 125I-insulin binding were inversely related to the levels of plasma ...

Intracranial epidermoid tumors are epithelially derived lesions that may present particular challenges to neurosurgeons, often encasing critical neurovascular structures and extending into multiple subarachnoid cisterns. We aimed to evaluate our recent experience with endoscopic assistance to craniotomy with microsurgical resection of these lesions.A retrospective review of patients undergoing endoscopic-assisted craniotomy for resection of an epidermoid tumor at the Keck School of Medicine of University ...

This study examined the transactional interplay among dimensions of destructive interparental conflict (i.e., hostility and dysphoria), children's emotional insecurity, and their psychological problems from middle childhood and adolescence. Participants were 232 families, with the first of five measurement occasions occurring when children were in first grade (M age = 7 years). Cross-lagged, autoregressive models were conducted with a multiple-method, multiple-informant measurement approach to identify ...

Abstract DNA double-strand breaks drive genomic instability. However, it remains unknown how these processes may affect the biomechanical properties of the nucleus and what role nuclear mechanics play in DNA damage and repair efficiency. Here, we have used Atomic Force Microscopy to investigate nuclear mechanical changes, arising from externally induced DNA damage. We found that nuclear stiffness is significantly reduced after cisplatin treatment, as a consequence of DNA damage signalling. This ...

This multistudy article examined the relative strength of mediational pathways involving hostile, disengaged, and uncooperative forms of interparental conflict, children's emotional insecurity, and their externalizing problems across 2 longitudinal studies. Participants in Study 1 consisted of 243 preschool children (M age = 4.60 years) and their parents, whereas Study 2 consisted of 263 adolescents (M age = 12.62 years) and their parents. Both studies utilized multimethod, multi-informant assessment ...

Building on empirical documentation of children's involvement in interparental conflicts as a weak predictor of psychopathology, we tested the hypothesis that involvement in conflict more consistently serves as a moderator of associations between children's emotional reactivity to interparental conflict and their psychological problems. In Study 1, 263 early adolescents (M age = 12.62 years), mothers, and fathers completed surveys of family and child functioning at 2 measurement occasions spaced 2 ...

When people respond to a target (T1) in a rapid serial visual presentation stream, their perception of a subsequent target (T2) is impaired if the intertarget stimulus onset asynchrony is between about 100 and 500 ms. Three experiments supported the interference model's (K. L. Shapiro, J. E. Raymond, & K. M. Arnell, 1994) claim that this attentional blink reflects competition for retrieval among multiple items in visual short-term memory. Experiments 1 and 2 revealed that items appearing during the blink ...

An epidemic of herpes simplex virus type 1 occurred in 60 of 175 wrestlers (34%) attending a four-week intensive training camp. Five of these 60 patients (8%) developed ocular involvement that included follicular conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and phlyctenular disease. Cultures of the conjunctiva and eyelid vesicles were positive for herpes simplex virus type 1 in four of the five patients with ocular disease. The viral isolates were compared by restriction-endonuclease analysis, which disclosed that ...

We draw on the values literature from social psychology and the acculturation literature from cross-cultural psychology to develop and test a theory of how signals about an organization's diversity management (DM) approach affect perceptions of organizational attractiveness among potential employees. We examine the mediating effects of individuals' merit-based attributions about hiring decisions at the organization, as well as the moderating effects of their racioethnicity and the racioethnic composition ...

Significance Advances in material processes for bioreplication have led to the use of bioinspired designs in a wide variety of practical applications, often at a scale involving nanofabrication. Such techniques also provide the opportunity to examine the functional significance of nanostructured organismal properties within biological systems. This paper describes the replication of fine-scale elements of the exoskeleton of buprestid beetles that produce a visually interpreted mating signal. A nanofabricated ...
