Shock is common in the intensive care unit, affecting up to one third of patients. Treatment of shock is centered upon managing hypotension and ensuring adequate perfusion via administration of fluids and catecholamine vasopressors. Due to the risks associated with catecholamine vasopressors, interest has grown in using catecholamine-sparing agents such as midodrine and methylene blue. Midodrine is an orally administered alpha-1 adrenergic agonist while methylene blue is an intravenously administered ...

Internet resources abound for preservice teacher (PST) use today, but we do not know how they choose and describe their implementation of them. This study investigates 158 elementary PSTs’ lesson plans across eight courses to describe plan inspiration and justification. PSTs reported being inspired by cooperating teachers (CTs), friends and family members, university courses, and Internet resources. In some cases, these PSTs simply followed lesson plans given to them. In other cases, they collected, ...

Nutritionists have suggested that kwashiorkor is related to low dietary protein and/or antioxidant intake. This study explored the hypothesis that among Malawian children with severe malnutrition, those with kwashiorkor consume a diet with less micronutrient- and antioxidant-rich foods, such as fish, eggs, tomatoes and orange fruits (mango, pumpkin and papaya), than those with marasmus. A case-control method with a food frequency questionnaire was used to assess the habitual diet. Children with severe ...

Hepatic hollow fiber bioreactors are a promising class of bioartificial liver assist device (BLAD). The development of this type of device is currently hindered by limited oxygen transport to cultured hepatocytes, due to the low solubility of oxygen in aqueous media. In order to increase the oxygen spectrum to cultured hepatocytes housed within a hollow fiber bioreactor, several different engineering strategies were explored in this study. These included: supplementing the circulating media stream ...

The production of a fully functional bioartificial liver assist device (BLAD) would greatly enhance available treatment options for patients suffering from acute liver failure. Currently, inadequate oxygen provision to hepatocytes seeded within hollow fiber bioreactors hampers development of a viable hollow fiber-based BLAD. Experimentally, oxygen provision to primary rat hepatocytes cultured within hollow fiber bioreactors was measured, it was observed that supplementation with an oxygen carrier ( ...

Jesse P. Sullivan, Andre F. Palmer,

Abstract Hepatic hollow fiber bioreactors are considered a promising class of bioartificial liver assist device (BLAD). Unfortunately, limited oxygen (O 2 ) transport to hepatocytes within this device hinders further development. Hepatocytes in vivo (in the liver sinusoid) experience a wide range of oxygen tensions (pO 2 = 25–70 mmHg), which is important for development of proper differentiated function (zonation). Previously, we observed that bovine red blood cell (bRBC) supplementation of the circulating ...

Abstract A priori knowledge of the dissolved oxygen (O 2 ) concentration profile within a hepatic hollow fiber (HF) bioreactor is important in developing an effective bioartificial liver assist device (BLAD). O 2 provision is limiting within HF bioreactors and we hypothesize that supplementing a hepatic HF bioreactor's circulating media with bovine red blood cells (bRBCs), which function as an O 2 carrier, will improve oxygenation. The dissolved O 2 concentration profile within a single HF (lumen, membrane, ...

Abstract The current study established a procedure to evaluate the capability of rats on postnatal days (PND) 21, 26, and 30 to perform a spatial serial reversal task using a T‐maze. Training consisted of an acquisition session followed by a series of six reversal sessions. To examine the role of proactive interference in the serial reversal effect, the point of reversal was manipulated so that it occurred at the start of each session (between‐sessions) or the midpoint of each session (within‐sessions). ...
