Abstract Alginate/chitosan polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) hybrid fibers are promising materials for scaffold‐making in tissue engineering. In this study, a new method termed “hydro‐spinning” was developed to make alginate/chitosan hybrid fibers. In hydro‐spinning, a chitosan solution was pumped into a flowing sodium alginate solution and sheared into streamlines. These elongated streamlines subsequently transformed into alginate/chitosan PEC ribbon‐like fibers before breaking up into pieces. Average ...

Abstract Nitrosative stress has been implicated in the pathophysiology of several CNS disorders, including multiple sclerosis (MS) and its animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). We have recently shown that protein nitrosothiols (PrSNOs) accumulate in the brain of MS patients, and there is indirect evidence that PrSNO levels are also increased in EAE. In this study we sought to identify the major PrSNOs in the spinal cord of EAE animals prepared by active immunization of C57/BL6 ...

Abstract In this letter, a theoretical degradation model of LEDs at dynamic working conditions was proposed. The Arrhenius effective temperature (AET) was used to describe the effect of dynamic working temperature. Utilizing the concept of AET, the lifetime prediction of LEDs at dynamic working conditions can be carried out based on the data base at steady state. It was found that the activation energy has a great effect on the numerical value of AET. The extraction of activation energy from steady ...

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is known for its potent effect on neuronal survival, but its role in the development and function of synapses is not well studied. Using Xenopus nerve-muscle co-cultures, we show that GDNF and its family member neurturin (NRTN) facilitate the development of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). Long-term application of GDNF significantly increased the total length of neurites in the motoneurons. GDNF also caused an increase in the number and the size of ...

12( S )-Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12( S )HETE) is a bioactive metabolite of arachidonic acid synthesized by 12-lipoxygenase. The 12-lipoxygenase blocker, baicalein, prevents epidermal growth factor (EGF)-induced activation of protein kinase C (PKC) α and β in lens epithelial cells, whereas supplementation with 12( S )HETE reverses this effect, suggesting that EGF and 12( S )HETE may work together to activate PKC. This study investigates the mechanism of PKCβ activation by EGF and 12( S )HETE. 12( S )HETE ...

The LED packages under investigation employed the same configuration of package components, except for the chip sizes. The forward current was found to increase with the chip size at the same forward voltage due to the area increase of current spreading. The luminous flux and optical power were found to increase with the chip size at the same current density. The ...

We report a unique property of nanocapillaries for chromatographic separations of ionic species. Due to the electric double layer overlap, ions are unevenly distributed inside a nanochannel, with counterions enriched near the wall and co-ions concentrated in the middle of the channel. As a pressure-driven flow is induced, the co-ions will move faster than the counterions. This differential transport results in a chromatographic separation. In this work, we introduce the fundamental mechanism of ...

Crack tunneling is a crack growth feature often seen in stable tearing crack growth tests on specimens made of ductile materials and containing through-thickness cracks with initially straight crack fronts. As a specimen is loaded monotonically, the midsection of the crack front will advance first, which will be followed by crack growth along the rest of the crack front, leading to the formation of a thumbnail shaped crack-front profile. From the viewpoint of fracture mechanics, crack tunneling ...

We have recently shown that several carbonylated proteins, including glial fibrillary acidic protein, β-actin and β-tubulin, accumulate within cerebellar astrocytes during the chronic phase of myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)(35-55) peptide-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in C57BL/6 mice. As protein carbonyls cannot be repaired and there is less oxidative stress in chronic than in acute EAE, we hypothesized that the accumulation of carbonylated proteins in these animals ...

Aggregating into multicellular spheroids within alginate–poly-L-lysine–alginate (APA) microcapsules is important in maintaining the cellular viability and specific functions. However, in the absence of a vascular network, cells in the core of large-sized spheroids are gradually necrotic because of oxygen transfer limitations. In this study, a novel APA microcapsule embedded with three-dimensional fibrous scaffolds (called APA-FS) was proposed to eliminate cellular necrosis by regulating cells to form ...
