In comparison with matched nonvegetarian women, postmenopausal vegetarian women were found to have lower urinary levels of estriol and total estrogens, lower plasma prolactin levels, and higher plasma sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels. These differences were not explained by differences in body weight or obesity. Plasma SHBG levels were highly correlated with plasma high-density Iipoprotein cholesterol levels, which were also higher in vegetarians than in nonvegetarians. These hormonal differences ...

Abstract Laboratory permeameter tests were conducted on moderately humified peat samples to investigate apparent non-Darcian flow behaviour previously reported from seepage tube experiments. The laboratory tests were carried out for hydraulic gradients in the range 1.5–17.5 The mean head could be varied independently. Seepage velocity was found to increase more than proportionally with hydraulic gradient i . A flow relationship of the Swartzendruber type fitted the data, which showed a tendency for ...

Jim Brown, Brian Greenwood, R. J. Terry,

Summary This paper reports the results of in vitro experiments which attempt to elucidate the mechanisms whereby Gambian children control acute infections of Plasmodium falciparum. It was shown initially that mononuclear cells from children with acute malaria, in the presence of specific antibody, caused a marked reduction in in vitro parasite growth. IgM antibodies appeared to be considerably more effective than IgG. T or B lymphocytes were ineffective in the system; adherent cells alone had some ...

The navigation of imagery from polar orbiting weather satellites includes the correction for geometric distortions due to earth shape/earth rotation, satellite orbit variations, and satellite attitude along with the resampling of the satellite image to a selected geographic map projection. The routine image navigation procedure also compensates for the distortion of the satellite imagery due to the nonlinear scanning of the sensor system. This paper reviews general methods for performing this image ...

We tested global pigment and primary productivity algorithms based on a new data compilation of over 12,000 stations occupied mostly in the northern hemisphere, from the late 1950's to 1988. The results showed high variability of the fraction of total pigment contributed by chlorophyll a (ρ), which is required for subsequent predictions of primary productivity. Two models, which predict pigment concentration normalized to attenuation length or euphotic depth, were checked against 2,800 vertical profiles ...

A. E. Vardy, Jim Brown,

The propagation of pressure waves along railway tunnels is reviewed with special emphasis on isolated compressive waves such as those generated during the early stages of train entry to a tunnel. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of pressure gradients in the leading regions of the waves — because the gradients just before the tunnel exit determine the strengths of micro-pressure waves that are the focus of attention in TRANSAERO Work Package 4.1. The physical phenomena considered herein ...

Abstract Background: Patients with heart failure suffer from poor health outcomes and require combinations of medications to treat their disease. Providing patients with knowledge through education is one mechanism to help them improve compliance with complicated treatment regimens. Methods: We developed and tested two instruments. The first instrument, which we call the measure of educational material acceptability (EMA), was designed to help us differentiate between written educational materials ...
