In adopting an institutional work perspective, we contend that OTP’s continuance has not been the sole product of Canada’s success at the Olympic and Paralympic Games or lobbying efforts to secure additional funding. Rather, OTP’s permanence can also be explained as the by-product of the activities and actions of OTP itself and its supporting stakeholders to embed and ...

An 8% annual growth internationally in registered ice hockey players has spurred the need for more officials. Understanding long-term motivations of these officials can help with retention. The present study utilized self-determination theory (SDT) to examine the motivations of ice hockey officials who continue in the officiating profession. A qualitative analysis of 15 semi-structured interviews of officials in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) was employed to gain understanding of ice hockey ...

The basic structural components of the shells are doubly corrugated steel panels fabricated of thin sheet steel that is first deformed into a U-shaped big corrugation. Then, to obtain the proper curvature, small corrugations are rolled into the bottom and into the sides of the big corrugation. The proposed finite element model consists of an assemblage of curved rectangular elements with boundaries parallel to lines of principal curvature of the shell. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the use of two real-time ultrasound data-collection methods to develop a dynamic assessment of live weight growth, protein and lipid accretions, and lysine requirement curves on two commercial swine operations. For the first method, pigs (40 barrows and 40 gilts) were weighed (ranging from 18 to 121 kg) and scanned ultrasonically to collect backfat depth and longissimus muscle area measurements every 3 wk in the finishing facility on two farms (serial method). ...

Livestock contribute to food supply by converting low-value materials, inedible or unpalatable for people, into milk, meat, and eggs; livestock also decrease food supply by competing with people for food, especially grains fed to pigs and poultry. Currently, livestock supply 13% of energy to the world's diet but consume one-half the world's production of grains to do so.

Feeding the World in 2050 is a major challenge at the forefront of the global development agenda. The importance of agriculture in addressing this challenge has re-emerged in recent years as food security issues are considered in a more holistic manner. The role of livestock as part of the solution is, however, often not considered. This article presents a brief overview of the global food security challenge, and considers the increased focus on holistic food systems. It contends that animal agriculture ...

There is an ongoing debate on what constitutes sustainable intensification of agriculture (SIA). In this paper, we propose that a paradigm for sustainable intensification can be defined and translated into an operational framework for agricultural development. We argue that this paradigm must now be defined—at all scales—in the context of rapidly rising global environmental changes in the Anthropocene, while focusing on eradicating poverty and hunger and contributing to human wellbeing. The criteria ...

Jimmy W. Smith, A. Naazie, A. Larbi, K. Agyemang, Shirley A. Tarawali,

Rapid growth of the human and livestock populations in sub-Saharan Africa is creating unprecedented increases in food and feed demands. These population pressures on a fixed landbase are likely to promote severe competition for resources and drive agriculture progressively towards intensification. Integrated crop-livestock systems, already common in the highlands, are expected to evolve rapidly elsewhere. Research is required to develop technological alternatives which promote better resource use ...

We conducted four experiments to examine the effects of adding zinc oxide (ZnO) and(or) copper sulfate (CuSO4) to diets for weanling pigs. In Exp. 1 and 2, weanling pigs (initially 5.3 kg and 19 ± 2 d of age) were fed diets containing 250 ppm of added Cu (CuSO4) and either 110 or 3,110 ppm of added. Zn (ZnO). No differences (P > .10) were observed in either experiment for ADG, ADFI, or feed efficiency (G:F). In Exp. 3,240 pigs (initially 4.45 kg and 15 ± 2 d of age) were used to determine the interactive effects ...
