The spatial distribution of vegetation in the Qilian Mountain area was quantified with remote sensing data. The MODIS NDVI values for June, July, August and September are the best indicators for the vegetation growth during a year in this area and thus were used in this study. The results obtained by analysing NDVI data for seven years from 2000 to 2006 clearly indicated that elevation and aspect, as a proxy for precipitation and temperature, are two very important factors for the vertical distribution ...

The relationship between vegetation growth and groundwater in arid areas is one of the most actively researching topics in ecohydrology. On account of little precipitation, the oasis is the only form of sustenance for living and economic development, for the local people in the arid areas of Northwest China. During recent years, with the increase of water consumption in the middle stream area of the Heihe river basin, the incoming water has decreased gradually and the area of the Ejina oasis in ...

In arid regions, an oasis plays an important role. It is nearly the only support of living and economic development for the local people. In recent years, the recession of the oasis areas appeared to be significant in Northwest China. It caused a series of environmental problems and part of the area even became the source of sandstorms. In this article, the long-term vegetation change of the Ejina Oasis, which is located in the downstream area of the Heihe River basin, was analyzed based on remote ...

The relationship between vegetation growth and groundwater in arid areas is one of the most active research topics in ecohydrology. Due to less precipitation, the vegetation growth has close relationship with groundwater in northwest arid inland areas of China. Research on the ecological effect of groundwater from large scale has important significance in eco-environment recovery and protection. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the vegetation growth and the depth to water ...

Progressive growth and metastasis of solid tumors require angiogenesis, or the formation of new blood vessels. Endostatin is a 20-kDa carboxy-terminal fragment of collagen XVIII that has been shown to inhibit endothelial cell proliferation and tumor angiogenesis. Replication-deficient recombinant adenovirus (rAd) vectors were constructed, which encoded secreted forms of human and mouse endostatin (HECB and MECB, respectively), and, as a control, human alkaline phosphatase (APCB). Accumulation of endostatin ...

The RB and p16INK4A tumor suppressor genes function in the same pathway of cell cycle control. Previous evidence indicates that the p16INK4A gene is transcriptionally repressed by the RB gene product, pRB. In this study using human ovarian cancer cell lines, we found that RB protein and mRNA were expressed at higher levels in cell lines lacking p16 than in those with normal p16. Since this suggests a potential role of p16 in regulating the cellular level of pRB, we studied the effect of wild-type ...

It is worth highlighting that, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, vertical profiles of atmospheric parameters and $C_n^2$ were measured at Lhasa, south of the Tibetan Plateau, using balloon-borne radiosondes. Based on the measurements, two new statistical models (Lhasa HMN and Lhasa Dewan) for estimating turbulence strength are proposed. Attention has been paid to evaluate the reliability of the two models to reconstruct vertical profiles of $C_n^2$ from a statistical perspective. The ...
