This study aimed to evaluate the effects of immunocastration on the performance, testosterone concentration, carcass traits and meat quality of feedlot-finished Nellore cattle. Fifty-eight males (430 ± 36 kg bodyweight; 24 months old) were separated into three groups in a randomised complete design: surgically castration (n = 15), immunocastrated (anti-gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Bopriva®) vaccine, n = 21) and non-castrated (n = 22). The animals were housed in individual pens and fed ad libitum for 90 days ...

Pregnancy toxemia is a disease that occurs in small ruminants (sheep and goats) during the last weeks of pregnancy due to frequent twin pregnancy. Females in their final third of gestation that carry multiple fetuses and are unable to consume energy for their metabolic demand, due to inadequate diet, are usually affected by this disorder. In addition, animals with a disease that occurs in the course of another disease or environmental stress can also be affected. It is characterized by energy disruption ...

Inclusion of vegetable oils in diets formulation of finishing beef cattle increases the availability of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the diet, which may modulate the carcass traits of lean meat producing animals. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of PUFA dietary concentration in animals from different genetic predispositions for fat deposition on carcass traits. Thirty Nellore and thirty crossbred Angus × Nellore (368 ± 28 kg bodyweight; 24 mo old) were weighed, tagged and allocated ...

The dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is an alternative to the comparative slaughter technique (CST), allowing the analysis of body chemical composition of fish in vivo. The present work aimed to standardize the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) technique in fish and determine the body chemical composition of Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) during different growth stages in vivo. By the relationship between chemical compositions of fish determined by ...

There is an increasing interest in the use of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs). However, there is a large variety of PROMs and a lack of consensus regarding preference for their use. Aim of this study is to determine how often PROMS are used for foot and ankle disorders, for what purpose PROMs are used, and what the preferences of the foot and ankle surgeons are, when choosing a PROM to use. Members of the Ankleplatform Study Group—Science of Variation Collaborative were invited to participate ...
