In the development of new products, both the use of residues and the use of renewable materials are important strategies for a more circular production. However, it is not enough just to idealize a new product as environmentally sustainable, it is also necessary to prove the hypothesis through scientifically accepted methodologies, such as life cycle assessment (LCA). Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate and compare, through LCA, the environmental performance of two composites reinforced ...

Typically, wine is a good experience, its quality being unknown before consumption, with wine drinkers tending to be risk-averse. This being so, expert and consumer opinions may help to fill this information void. Following the classic example of the Bordeaux region increasing numbers of wine producers submit their wines to the raters' evaluation, aware of its importance in consumer purchases and in the definition of wine prices. Portugal, particularly in the last decade, has been following this ...

Abstract Background Intradialytic hypotension, a complication of intermittent hemodialysis, decreases the efficacy of dialysis and increases long-term mortality. This study was aimed to determine whether different predialysis ultrasound cardiopulmonary profiles could predict intradialytic hypotension. Methods This prospective observational single-center study was performed in 248 critically ill patients with acute kidney injury undergoing intermittent hemodialysis. Immediately before hemodialysis, ...

Fabry disease (FD) is a rare and underdiagnosed X-linked disorder resulting from the deficient activity of the lysosomal hydrolase α-galactosidase A, which leads to storage of complex glycosphingolipids inside of lysosomes in critical organs and tissues, impairing their functions and consequently resulting in a progressive multisystem disease. FD is caused by mutations in the GLA gene, and only 4.6% of described mutations are located in the splice site regions. RNA splicing is an essential step to ...

Given the growing harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation there is an urgent need to develop effective strategies to prevent skin damages. Therefore, hydrogel or cotton and wool fabrics were impregnated with avobenzone (AVO)-loaded and omega-3 (ω3)-enriched lipid formulations (liposomes – LIP, nanostructured lipid carriers – NLC and solid lipid nanoparticles – SLN) to obtain UV blocking sunscreen gel or functional textiles. To evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of AVO and the sun blocking ...

The knowledge and the capacity to describe the phase equilibria of systems composed by transesterification products are very important for an adequate design and operation of biodiesel production and purification facilities. Despite their importance for the production of ethylic biodiesel, fatty acid ethyl ester + ethanol + glycerol systems have been, up to now, object of less attention than the corresponding systems formed during biodiesel production using methanol. In this work, new experimental measurements ...

The knowledge and the capacity to describe the liquid–liquid equilibria of systems composed of fatty acid ethyl esters, ethanol and water are crucial for an adequate design of the biodiesel washing units found in the ethylic biodiesel production processes. Since limited data is available for systems of this kind, in this work measurements were carried out for fatty acid ethyl esters + ethanol + water systems containing some of the fatty acid ethyl esters most commonly found in biodiesels: ethyl linoleate + ...

This paper examines some problems encountered in the expansion of isolated electrical systems (IES) in the Amazon region, more precisely, the thermoelectric systems used in that region. Supposing a certain degree of uncertainty in energy consumption, we evaluate the expansion of thermoelectric power from firewood and diesel fuel, together with variations for costs, CO2 emissions, and number of direct jobs (NDJ) generated with the use of these technologies. The analysis is accomplished by using fuzzy ...

SUMMARY The authors report an association between developmental language disorder and acquired aphasia in a 13‐year‐old right‐handed boy. Acquired aphasia was caused by a right‐frontal abscess (crossed aphasia). It was non‐fluent, with a disorder of auditory comprehension, an unusual feature of pre‐rolandic lesions. This case shows that developmental language impairment can be associated not only with an atypical cerebral dominance, but also with unusual patterns of intrahemispheric specialization. ...

The urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions along with growing energy security concerns has driven the search for alternatives to the internal combustion engine vehicle. One of the most promising solutions being considered is the electric vehicle. The commercialisation of electric vehicles is expected to instigate an array of new business opportunities for electrical utilities, particularly with the advent of the smart grid. This article presents the findings from a study on the potential ...

Most investigators consider the caroticotympanic artery to be a normal branch of the petrous portion of the internal carotid artery, although some authors disagree. The present study was conducted on forty human temporal bones removed from adult cadavers of both sexes. Twenty pieces were injected and dissected under a surgical microscope, 10 pieces were injected and submitted to corrosion, and 10 were injected and diaphanized in order to observe the frequency of the caroticotympanic artery in the ...

CYP46A1 is a neuron-specific cytochrome P450 that plays a pivotal role in maintaining cholesterol homeostasis in the CNS. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying human CYP46A1 expression are still poorly understood, partly because of the lack of a cellular model that expresses high levels of CYP46A1. Our previous studies demonstrated that specificity protein (Sp) transcription factors control CYP46A1 expression, and are probably responsible for cell-type specificity. Herein, we have differentiated ...

Abstract Understanding the uncertainty inherent in the analysis of diesel fuel consumption and its impact on the generation of electricity is an important topic for planning the expansion of isolated thermoelectric systems in the state of Amazonas. In light of this, a decision support system has been developed to forecast the cost of electricity production using non-stationary data by integrating the methodology of time series models with fuzzy systems and optimization tools. The method presented ...

Pattern recognition models have been increasingly applied to neuroimaging data over the last two decades. These applications have ranged from cognitive neuroscience to clinical problems. A common limitation of these approaches is that they do not incorporate previous knowledge about the brain structure and function into the models. Previous knowledge can be embedded into pattern recognition models by imposing a grouping structure based on anatomically or functionally defined brain regions. In this ...
