A case of Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis (PAP), in association with tuberculosis, is described in a 35-year-old diabetic patient. Lung biopsy showed an intra-alveolar accumulation of PAS-positive material, and multifocal granulomas compatible with tuberculosis. The bronchoalveolar culture was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. PAP results from an imbalance of the mechanisms that regulate the homeostasis of the surfactant, where specific proteins are involved, especially SP-A and SP-D, the cytokines, ...

Helicobacter pylori infection is the most important risk factor for gastric cancer. It is acquired predominantly during childhood, and understanding the determinants of infection in early life may translate into identifying preventive measures. However, the independent role of child day-care attendance remains to be understood. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between child day-care attendance and H. pylori infection in early life. The study was nested within Geração XXI, a birth ...

The concept of smart cities has gained relevance over the past few years. Public managers have been planning investments to turn their cities into smart cities. Maturity models can help managers to monitor the performance of urban indicators; however, these maturity models are not always capable of meeting their proposed goals. In this sense, this research aims to develop a maturity model that ranks the “smartness” of a city based on social and technological indicators. The Smart Cities Maturity ...

Abstract Background Helicobacter pylori infection is acquired mainly during childhood, but it may occur throughout life. Understanding the determinants of infection at different ages is essential to clarify dynamics of H. pylori related diseases and to design preventive strategies. Aim To estimate the prevalence of H. pylori infection at the age of 13 and the incidence after a 3-year follow-up and to identify risk factors for infection. Subjects and methods Adolescents born in 1990 were recruited in schools ...

The disordered urban growth that may favour the emergence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito in cities is a problem of increasing magnitude in middle- and high-income countries in the tropical part of the world. Currently, the World Health Organization (WHO) considers the control and elimination of Ae. aegypti a world-wide high priority as it is the main vector of many rapidly spreading viral diseases, dengue in particular. A major difficulty in controlling the proliferation of this vector is associated ...

Wilson's disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder which is caused by poor excretion of copper in mammalian cells. In this review, various issues such as effective characterization of ATP7B genes, scope of gene network topology in genetic analysis, pattern recognition using different computing approaches and fusion possibilities in imaging and genetic dataset are discussed vividly. We categorized this study into three major sections: (A) WD genetics, (B) diagnosis guidelines and (3) treatment ...
