Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that affects around 1 % of the human population worldwide.RA diagnosis can be difficult as there is no definitive test for its detection. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify biomarkers that could be used for RA diagnosis. Methods: Sera from a collagen-induced arthritis mouse model were used to select potential biomarkers for RA diagnosis by phage display technology. In silico and in vitro analyses were performed ...

A practical synthetic approach to the synthesis of 3-(organoselenyl)-imidazothiazines was developed. The methodology involved the regioselective 6-endo-dig cyclization of thiopropargyl benzimidazoles promoted by diorganyl diselenides and iron(III) chloride. The investigation to determine the best reaction conditions indicated the use of thiopropargyl benzimidazoles (0.25 mmol) with diorganyl diselenides (1.0 equiv) and iron(III) chloride (2.0 equiv) in dichloromethane at 40 °C for 30 min to be optimal. ...

Abstract The iron‐promoted tandem cyclization‐functionalization reaction of N ‐arylpropargylamines with diorganyl diselenides was developed for the preparation of 3‐(organoselanyl)‐1,2‐dihydroquinolines. The best result was obtained when the reaction of N ‐arylpropargylamines was carried out by the combination of diorganyl diselenides with FeCl 3 ⋅ 6H 2 O in nitromethane at 70 °C. The control experiments strongly support the cooperative relation between the iron salts and diorganyl diselenides and their ...

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a wide group of diseases, characterized by synovial inflammation and joint tissue damage. Due to the delay in the implementation of biomarkers into clinical practice and the association with severe sequels, there is an imperative need for new JIA diagnosis strategies. Electrochemical biosensors based on screen-printed electrodes and peptides are promising alternatives for molecular diagnosis. In this work, a novel biosensor for detecting juvenile idiopathic ...

ABSTRACT Based on the form-function interaction and its consequence to niche exploitation by fish species, the study aimed to identify ecomorphological patterns and to investigate the possibility of explaining the trophic niche breadth using the pattern of intraspecific ecomorphological diversity. We tested the following hypotheses: i) the morphology explains variations in diet among fish species; ii) the intraspecific ecomorphological diversity is related to the breadth of the trophic niche explored ...

An electrochemical genosensor was constructed for detection of specific DNA sequence of the hepatitis B virus, based on graphite electrodes modified with poly(4-aminophenol) and incorporating a specific oligonucleotide probe. The modified electrode containing the probe was evaluated by differential pulse voltammetry, before and after incubation with the complementary oligonucleotide target. Detection was performed by monitoring oxidizable DNA bases (direct detection) or using ethidium bromide as ...

Immobilization and hybridization of oligonucleotides or specific-gene PCR product (DENV-1), a conserved genomic sequence of the dengue virus, onto graphite electrode modified with poly(4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid), were carried out with success using both direct electrochemical oxidation of guanine or redox electroactive indicator ethidium bromide. Studies of oligonucleotides hybridization with the complementary target showed a decrease of both guanosine and adenosine current peaks, when compared ...

This Perspective article discusses the possible contributions of eye-tracking (ET) to the field of Educational Neuroscience based on an application of this tool at schools. We sought to explore the teachers’ view of ET videos recorded while students solved mathematical problems. More than 90% of the teachers could predict with great accuracy whether the students had answered the questions correctly or not based solely on the information provided by the ET videos. Almost all participants tried to ...

Currently, there are no specific markers for juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) diagnosis, which is based on clinical symptoms and some blood tests for diseases’ exclusion. Aiming to select new epitope-based antigens (mimotopes) that could recognize circulating autoantibodies in most JIA forms, we screened a phage displayed random peptide library against IgG antibodies purified from serum of JIA patients. ELISA assay was carried out to confirm immunoreactivity of selected peptides against sera IgG ...

Aluminum (Al) is an important environmental contaminant; however, there are not enough evidences of Al-induced cardiovascular dysfunction. We investigated the effects of acute exposure to aluminum chloride (AlCl3) on blood pressure, vascular reactivity and oxidative stress.Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: Untreated: vehicle (ultrapure water, ip) and AlCl3: single dose of AlCl3 (100mg/kg,ip). Mercury (Hg) is a widespread environmental pollutant that adversely affects the male reproductive system. The precise mechanisms underlying mercuric chloride (HgCl2)-induced toxicity are not fully understood; however, evidence indicates that oxidative stress may be involved in this process. Although the adverse effects of high levels of inorganic Hg on the male reproductive system have been investigated, the effects of low levels of exposure are unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate ...

The present work reports on the synthesis, biological assaying and docking studies of a series of 12 aryl thiosemicarbazones, which were planned to act over two main enzymes, cruzain and trypanothione reductase. These enzymes are used as targets of trypanocidal activity in Chagas disease control with a minimal mutagenic profile. Three p-nitroaromatic thiosemicarbazones showed high activity against Trypanosoma cruzi in in vitro assays (IC50 < 57 μM), and no mutagenic profile was observed in micronucleous ...
