Abstract A voltammetric method for the determination of free and total sulfur dioxide in beer is described. First, volatile aldehydes (mainly acetaldehyde) are purged with nitrogen from a beer sample diluted in alkaline medium, collected in an appropriate electrolyte trapping solution and determined, after derivatization with hydrazine, by voltammetry using a hanging mercury drop electrode. In 2 previously healthy groups of 14 children and 17 adults with cytomegalovirus mononucleosis, significant clinical differences were observed. Cervical lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly and lymphocytosis (>5 000/μl) were more common in children and protracted fever more common in adults. Exudative tonsillitis indistinguishable from infectious mononucleosis was sometimes seen in children but never in adults.

The introduction of β-cell autoantigens via the gut through Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) has been demonstrated to be a promising approach for diabetes reversal in NOD mice. A method that involved voltammetric determination of the levels of total sulfur dioxide (SO2) and acetaldehyde was developed for the determination of the level of free SO2 in beer. Free SO2 concentration is calculated by the difference between the concentrations of SO2 (total) and acetaldehyde. In a loss-of-viability screen using small molecules against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strain USA300 with a sub-MIC of a β-lactam, we found a small molecule, designated DNAC-1, which potentiated the effect of oxacillin (i.e., the MIC of oxacillin decreased from 64 to 0.25 μg/ml).
