Abstract A voltammetric method for the determination of free and total sulfur dioxide in beer is described. First, volatile aldehydes (mainly acetaldehyde) are purged with nitrogen from a beer sample diluted in alkaline medium, collected in an appropriate electrolyte trapping solution and determined, after derivatization with hydrazine, by voltammetry using a hanging mercury drop electrode. Then, the remaining beer solution is strongly acidified and (total) sulfur dioxide is purged with nitrogen, ...

This paper reports on the 2nd ShARe/CLEFeHealth evaluation lab which continues our evaluation resource building activities for the medical domain. In this lab we focus on patients' information needs as opposed to the more common campaign focus of the specialised information needs of physicians and other healthcare workers. The usage scenario of the lab is to ease patients and next-of-kins' ease in understanding eHealth information, in particular clinical reports. The 1st ShARe/CLEFeHealth evaluation ...

Tribological studies using 2D nanomaterials have gained notable attention in the last decade owing to their outstanding friction and wear performance. Within this group, MXenes are an emerging class that has moved into the focus of tribological research due to their easy-to-shear ability, favorable mechanical properties, and ability to generate beneficial tribo-films. The present study aims at scrutinizing the tribological performance of multilayer Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets when used as a lubricant ...

In 2 previously healthy groups of 14 children and 17 adults with cytomegalovirus mononucleosis, significant clinical differences were observed. Cervical lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly and lymphocytosis (>5 000/μl) were more common in children and protracted fever more common in adults. Exudative tonsillitis indistinguishable from infectious mononucleosis was sometimes seen in children but never in adults.

A new fossil flower, Kajanthus lusitanicus gen. et sp. nov, is described from the Early Cretaceous (late Aptian–early Albian) Chicalhão site near the village of Juncal, western Portugal, based on a single coalified specimen. The flower is small, actinomorphic, trimerous and bisexual, slightly compressed and with floral organs tightly adhering. The perianth is organised in more than two whorls. The inner two whorls consist of six bulky, apparently fleshy parts. The outer perianth whorls consist of ...

An increasing amount of people seek health advice on the web using search engines; this poses challenging problems for current search technologies. In this paper we report an initial study of the effectiveness of current search engines in retrieving relevant information for diagnostic medical circumlocutory queries, i.e., queries that are issued by people seeking information about their health condition using a description of the symptoms they observes (e.g. hives all over body) rather than the medical ...

The introduction of β-cell autoantigens via the gut through Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) has been demonstrated to be a promising approach for diabetes reversal in NOD mice. Here we show that a combination therapy of low-dose anti-CD3 with a clinical-grade self-containing L. lactis, appropriate for human application, secreting human proinsulin and interleukin-10, cured 66% of mice with new-onset diabetes, which is comparable to therapy results with plasmid-driven L. lactis. Initial blood glucose ...

Background: Eukaryote initiation factor 2 subunit β (eIF2β) plays a crucial role in regulation protein synthesis, which mediates the interaction of eIF2 with mRNA. eIF2β contains evolutionarily conserved polylysine stretches in amino-terminal region and a zinc finger motif in the carboxy-terminus.Methods: The gene eIF2β was cloned under tetracycline transcription control and the polylysine stretches were deleted by site-directed mutagenesis (eIF2βΔ3K). The plasmid was transfected into HEK 293 TetR ...

Alkylating agents damage DNA and proteins and are widely used in cancer chemotherapy. While cellular responses to alkylation-induced DNA damage have been explored, knowledge of how alkylation affects global cellular stress responses is sparse. Here, we examined the effects of the alkylating agent methylmethane sulfonate (MMS) on gene expression in mouse liver, using mice deficient in alkyladenine DNA glycosylase (Aag), the enzyme that initiates the repair of alkylated DNA bases. MMS induced a robust ...

The paper addresses two complex case studies of modal and structural identification of monuments in Portugal: the Clock Tower of Mogadouro and the Church of Jerónimos Monastery, in Lisbon. These are being monitored by University of Minho with vibration, temperature and relative air humidity sensors. Operational modal analysis is being used to estimate the modal parameters, followed by statistical analysis to evaluate the environmental effects on the dynamic response. The aim is to explore damage ...

A method that involved voltammetric determination of the levels of total sulfur dioxide (SO2) and acetaldehyde was developed for the determination of the level of free SO2 in beer. Free SO2 concentration is calculated by the difference between the concentrations of SO2 (total) and acetaldehyde. In fact, it is shown that SO2 reacts almost completely with acetaldehyde, which represents more than 95% of all aldehydes present in beer. In a first step, aldehydes are removed from an alkalinized sample of ...

This study investigated the effect of the spatial distribution of fat on the perception of fat-related sensory attributes using a model system that consisted of layered agar/gelatin gels containing oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion droplets dispersed in the gel matrix. Four layers of gel varying in the amount of emulsion droplets were combined to prepare samples with homogeneous and inhomogeneous distributions of fat (emulsion droplets). The composition of the gels was optimized to obtain samples with comparable ...

Patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation often present with acute kidney injury (AKI) in the postoperative period. It has been associated with a greater number of complications and high mortality rates. The goal of this study was to determine the incidence of AKI during the early posttransplant period and mortality in patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation in our hospital. In this retrospective cohort study, we reviewed the medical records of all patients aged >18 years undergoing ...

In a loss-of-viability screen using small molecules against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strain USA300 with a sub-MIC of a β-lactam, we found a small molecule, designated DNAC-1, which potentiated the effect of oxacillin (i.e., the MIC of oxacillin decreased from 64 to 0.25 μg/ml). Fluorescence microscopy indicated a disruption in the membrane structures within 15 min of exposure to DNAC-1 at 2× MIC. This permeabilization was accompanied by a rapid loss of membrane potential, ...

Cell‐mediated immunity and cytokines are probably involved in the pathogenesis of malaria. To investigate the role and the activity of different immune cells, we measured levels of tumour necrosis factor‐(TNF‐α), gamma interferon (IFN‐γ) and several interleukins (IL‐2, IL‐4, IL‐6 and IL‐10) in children with mild (MM) and cerebral (CM) Plasmodium falciparum malaria and compared them with those of healthy children from Guadalupe – Lobata District, St. Tomé Island, where malaria is mesoendemic. Both groups ...

International guidelines recommend avoiding intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) in patients with ischemic stroke who have a recent intake of a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC). To determine the risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) associated with use of IVT in patients with recent DOAC ingestion. This international, multicenter, retrospective cohort study included 64 primary and comprehensive stroke centers across Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Consecutive adult patients with ischemic ...
