Toxoplasma gondii crosses the intestinal barrier to spread into the body. We investigate the intestinal wall and epithelial cells of the duodenum of rats infected with T. gondii during different time points of acute infection. Male Wistar rats, 60 days of age, were assigned into groups that were orally inoculated with 5000 sporulated oocysts T. gondii for 6 h (G6), 12 h (G12), 24 h (G24), 48 h (G48), 72 h (G72), 7 days (G7d), and 10 days (G10d). The control group (CG) received saline. The rats were killed ...

The nose-to-brain route has been widely investigated to improve drug targeting to the central nervous system (CNS), where lipid nanoparticles (solid lipid nanoparticles - SLN and nanostructured lipid carriers - NLC) seem promising, although they should meet specific criteria of particle size (PS) <200 nm, polydispersity index (PDI) 80%. To optimize SLN and NLC formulations, design of experiment (DoE) has been recommended as a quality by design (QbD) tool.

The main limitation to the success of central nervous system (CNS) therapies lies in the difficulty for drugs to cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and reach the brain. Regarding its structure and enzymatic complexity, crossing the BBB is a challenge, although several alternatives have been identified. For instance, the use of drugs encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles has been described as one of the most efficient approaches to bypass the BBB, as they allow the passage of drugs through this barrier, ...

Abstract. Observations of turbidity provide quantitative information about water quality. However, the number of available in situ measurements for water quality determination is usually limited in time and space. Here, we present an analysis of the temporal and spatial variability of the turbidity of an Amazon floodplain lake using two approaches: (1) wavelet analysis of a turbidity time series measured by an automatic monitoring system, which should be improved/simplified, and (2) turbidity samples ...

Through the ingestion of oocysts, the parasite crosses the intestinal barrier, where the enteric nervous system is located. The objective was to investigate the kinetics of neuronal and glial responses during acute T. gondii infection. Methods We used 45 Wistar rats that were divided into a control group and infected groups that were evaluated at 6, ...

The emergence of cities and the ongoing growth of urban areas have contributed to an overwhelming increase in negative environmental impacts. A major concern is the impact caused by the inadequate disposal of municipal solid waste in open dumps without proper regulation or planning. The negative impacts caused by the inadequate disposal of solid waste include the contamination of groundwater and soils, the proliferation of disease vectors, and odoriferous and visual pollution. One specific problem ...

Detected in the aquatic environment, risperidone can alter the behavior of exposed species. Natural products are great prototypes for the design of new anticancer agents. The plant-derived natural product 6α,7β-dihydroxyvouacapan-17β-oic acid (1) is promising for the development of more potent antiproliferative agents against human cancer cells. Indeed, its lactone derivative 6α-hydroxyvouacapan-7β,17β-lactone (2), a non-natural furanoditerpene, exhibited higher anticancer activity than compound 1.
