Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) play an important role as tools for identifying potential network threats. In the context of ever-increasing traffic volume on computer networks, flow-based NIDS arise as good solutions for real-time traffic classification. In recent years, different flow-based classifiers have been proposed using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. Nevertheless, classical ML-based classifiers have some limitations. For instance, they require large amounts of labeled data for ...

Lung deep lymphatic drainage (LDLD) plays an important role in the removal of foreign materials from lungs being alveolar macrophages the first line of phagocytic defence with high affinity for pathogenic microorganisms. Bacillus subtilis is a well-known genome- decoded saprophyte of the human respiratory tract used in research and in the biotechnology industry. Lung deep lymphatic chains (LDLC) constitute one of the first sites of lung tumours’ dissemination. In this work we intended to develop and ...

The synthesis of rare-earth-doped barium tungstate has increased in recent decades due to the attractive electrical and optical properties of the material. In this study, erbium-doped barium tungstate was synthesized by the co-precipitation method with three different concentrations: Ba(1-x)ErxWO4 (where x = 0.00, 0.01, and 0.02). The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive ...

The increasing demand for intermediate covering materials in municipal solid waste landfills stimulates studies for finding alternative materials for this purpose. This study evaluates the use of dregs and grits and of lime mud generated in kraft pulp mills in considerably large volumes as covering materials in municipal solid waste landfills. Emphasis was given to the generated leachate quality and effects on the microbiological activities within the landfill cells. Three experimental units simulating ...

The standard enthalpies of formation of several crystalline sodium alkoxides, ΔHof(NaOR, cr), have been determined by reaction-solution calorimetry. A linear correlation has been found between ΔHOf(NaOR, cr) and ΔHof(ROH, 1/cr) for R = n-alkyl, enabling the prediction of data for other sodium alkoxides. The results were also used to derive the lattice energies and the thermochemical radii of the anions OR−.

The aim of this study was to evaluate histochemically and ultrastructurally the sternomastoid muscle (SM) of adults and aged rats, employing histochemic (NADH-TR reaction) and transmission electron microscopic methods. It was used 20 rats, divided into two groups: adults (n=10), animals with 4 months of age, and aged group (n=10), animals with 24 months of age. Five animals from each group were anesthetized with an overdose of urethane (3g/kg i.p.), and the muscles dissected after the samples processing ...

Chitosan–silica porous hybrids were prepared by a novel strategy in order to improve the mechanical properties of chitosan (CHT) in the hydrogel state. The inorganic silica phase was introduced by sol–gel reactions in acidic medium inside the pores of already prepared porous scaffolds. In order to make the scaffolds insoluble in acidic media chitosan was cross-linked by genipin (GEN) with an optimum GEN concentration of 3.2 wt.%. Sol–gel reactions took place with Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and ...

The work presents the characterization of clays from sterile mining of the concentrated phosphatic materials of Araxá in Minas Gerais as pozzolanic materials. Three clays of distinct tones, namely, yellow (YC), red (RC), and intermediate (IC) clays, were used at different levels of excavation depth. The clays were calcined at three temperatures (680, 760, and 840 °C) in a muffle-type electric oven. The pozzolanic activity levels of the calcined clays was measured through the conductivity change in saturated ...

The main objective of this work was to study refuse-derived fuels (RDF) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) upgrading by pyrolysis of blends of these materials with wood. The study considered three operational conditions: cracking temperature, heating rate, and different wt.% of RDF and HDPE. The results demonstrate that the cracking temperature of 500 °C and the faster heating rates increased the liquid yield for RDF blends. On the other hand, HDPE blends favor gas production at 550 °C and faster ...

A cohort of 297 HIV-infected pregnant women was followed from January 1996 to December 2001. The overall transmission rate was 3.57% and remained constant over time. Low birth-weight was independently associated with a higher risk of vertical transmission (P=0.0072), whereas a longer duration of antiretroviral drugs during pregnancy was independently associated with a lower risk of transmission (P=0.0084). Further decreases in transmission should be obtained by initiating prophylaxis earlier in pregnancy.

This paper presents the contributions of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and location models towards planning regional wastewater systems (sewers and wastewater treatment plants) serving small agglomerations, i.e. agglomerations with less than 2,000 inhabitants. The main goal was to develop a decision support tool for tracing and locating regional wastewater systems. The main results of the model are expressed in terms of number, capacity and location of Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) and ...
