We present a new approach to perform any linear transformation of gridded potential field data using the equivalent‐layer principle. It is particularly efficient for processing areas with a large amount of data. An N × N data window is inverted using an M × M equivalent layer, with M greater than N so that the equivalent sources extend beyond the data window. Only the transformed field at the center of the data window is computed by premultiplying the equivalent source matrix by the row of the Green’ ...

Persistent migraine aura without infarction is a rare but well documented condition. According to the International Headache Society (HIS) criteria, this disturbance is defined by the persistence of a migraine aura for more than one week without radiographic evidence of infarction.1 Here we describe the case of an 11-year-old girl suffering from migraine without aura since the age of four. She experienced two episodes of persistent negative visual aura with no evidence of infarction. To the best ...

We describe an integrated methodology to compute long-term marginal prices in distribution networks. Long-term marginal prices are considered the most interesting and economically sound way of allocating network costs to users. Additionally, they inherently deal with the revenue-reconciliation problem, as they generally do not require other large supplementary tariff terms. The proposed methodology uses fuzzy sets to model uncertainties in load forecasts and considers several criteria to guide the ...

An α-amylase produced by Paecilomyces variotii was purified by DEAE-cellulose ion exchange chromatography, followed by Sephadex G-100 gel filtration and electroelution. The α-amylase showed a molecular mass of 75 kDa (SDS–PAGE) and pI value of 4.5. Temperature and pH optima were 60 °C and 4.0, respectively. The enzyme was stable for 1 h at 55 °C, showing a t50 of 53 min at 60 °C. Starch protected the enzyme against thermal inactivation. The α-amylase was more stable in alkaline pH. It was activated ...

The juvenile form of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (JNCLs), or Batten disease, results from mutations in the CLN3 gene, and it is characterized by the accumulation of lipopigments in the lysosomes of several cell types and by extensive neuronal death. We report that the yeast model for JNCL (btn1-Δ) that lacks BTN1, the homologue to human CLN3, has increased resistance to menadione-generated oxidative stress. Expression of human CLN3 complemented the btn1-Δ phenotype, and equivalent Btn1p/Cln3 mutations ...

Nitric oxide (NO) is a small molecule with distinct roles in diverse physiological functions in biological systems, among them the control of the apoptotic signalling cascade. By combining proteomic, genetic and biochemical approaches we demonstrate that NO and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) are crucial mediators of yeast apoptosis. Using indirect methodologies and a NO-selective electrode, we present results showing that H2O2-induced apoptotic cells synthesize NO that is associated ...

Microcystins (MCs) constitute a family of cyanobacterial toxins, with more than 80 variants. These toxins are able to induce hepatotoxicity in several organisms mainly through the inhibition of protein phosphatases PP1 and PP2A and oxidative stress generation. Since recent evidence shows that MCs can either accumulate in brain or alter behavior patterns of fish species, in this study we tested the in vitro and in vivo effects of MC-LR at different concentrations on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity ...

Abstract Elevated glucocorticoids, during pregnancy, alter emotionality and increase propensity to drug abuse later in life, albeit through substrates and mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, we examined whether antenatal glucocorticoid exposure induces enduring structural changes in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), an important relay point in the reward limbic circuitry. To this end, rat dams were exposed to the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone (DEX) on days 18 and 19 of gestation, and ...

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) typically present difficulties in engaging and interacting with their peers. Thus, researchers have been developing different technological solutions as support tools for children with ASD. Social robots, one example of these technological solutions, are often unaware of their game partners, preventing the automatic adaptation of their behavior to the user. Information that can be used to enrich this interaction and, consequently, adapt the system behavior ...

The presence of multifractality in a time series shows different correlations for different time scales as well as intermittent behaviour that cannot be captured by a single scaling exponent. The identification of a multifractal nature allows for a characterization of the dynamics and of the intermittency of the fluctuations in non-linear and complex systems. In this study, we search for a possible multifractal structure (multifractality signature) of the flux variability in the quasar 3C 273 time ...

The question of saturation of self-organized criticality in the ``game of Life'' is analyzed through finite-size scaling. We have carried out connection-machine simulations for lattices up to 1024\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1024. In that range we find no evidence of saturation. We do, however, find finite-size exponents that seem inconsistent with a single length-scale picture at criticality.

Ammonium ( NH 4 + ) leads to chronological life span (CLS) shortening in Saccharomyces cerevisiae BY4742 cells, particularly evident in cells starved for auxotrophy-complementing amino acids (leucine, lysine, and histidine) simultaneously. Here, we report that the effect of NH 4 + on aging yeast depends on the specific amino acid they are deprived of. Compared with no amino acid starvation, starvation for leucine alone or in combination with histidine resulted in the most pronounced NH 4 + -induced CLS shortening, ...

Abstract In this paper, we solve the revenue maximization problem of a multi-product monopolist when the products are substitutes. We consider a Hotelling model with two horizontally differentiated goods located at the endpoints of the segment. Consumers are located uniformly on the segment; their valuations for each good are equal to the base consumption value minus distance costs. When the base consumption value is high, the seller maximizes her expected profit by offering a menu of base and opaque ...
