Successive cycles of water absorption and loss favor weathering deterioration, one of the main factors that affect the quality of soybean seeds. This study evaluated the physiological, physical, and morpho-anatomical changes in soybean seeds under weathering deterioration at the pre-harvest phase. Six soybean cultivars (BMX Apolo, DM 6563, NS 5959, NA 5909, BMX Potência, and TMG 1175) were produced in a greenhouse and underwent weathering deterioration through a rainfall simulation system, applying ...

We present one of the first lists of vascular plants for an area in the Brazilian State of Espírito Santo (ES). Field expeditions were carried out between 2011 and 2016 in four portions of vegetation in Serra do Valentim, ES, to collect samples of reproductive botanical material. After identification, we found a total of 590 species distributed in 327 genera and 112 botanical families. Orchidaceae (61 spp.), Melastomataceae (40), Asteraceae (37), Rubiaceae (29) and Polypodiaceae and Solanaceae (24) were ...

Abstract Regional floristic lists are essential for defining biodiversity conservation strategies and are key to assist in filling knowledge gaps. They aim to provide a data source for applying tools to reduce extinction rates and to conserve ecosystems. Herein we present the results of an inventory of vascular plants in a rainforest in the Caparaó National Park (CNP) and approach their implications for conservation and management of this protected area and the surrounding communities. We conducted ...

Purpose Some first-line cytotoxic chemotherapics, e.g. doxorubicin, paclitaxel and oxaliplatin, induce activation of the immune system through immunogenic cell death (ICD). Tumor cells undergoing ICD function as a vaccine, releasing damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), which act as adjuvants, and neoantigens of the tumor are recognized as antigens. ICD induction is rare, however it yields better and long-lasting antitumor responses to chemotherapy. Advanced metastatic melanoma (AMM) is incurable ...

Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic disease caused by the high absorption and deposition of iron in several organs. This accumulation results in several clinical complications such as cirrhosis, arthritis, cardiopathies, diabetes, sexual disorders, and skin darkening. The H63D and C282Y mutations are well defined in the HH etiology. The objective of this article is identification of the H63D and C282Y mutations in the HFE protein gene and the frequency assessment of these mutations in patients ...

There is evidence that the renin-angiotensin system plays an important role in ovulation in cattle. Using an in vivo model, we investigated the role of angiotensin (Ang) II in bovine ovulation by injecting Ang II receptor antagonists into ovulatory follicles. Animals (n = 102) were pre-synchronized and, when the follicles reached 12 mm, they were given the respective treatment and the cows received GnRH agonist (i.m.) to induce ovulation. The ovulation rate was significantly lower when 100 mu M saralasin ( ...

Abstract: Characteristics related to seed quality have been rarely used in studies on the genetic diversity of passion fruit. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity between progenies constituted by hybrids and reciprocals, based on seed emergence and vigor traits. On the 28th day, emergence percentage, emergence speed index, shoot length, root length and total length of seedling; dry weight, number of normal seedlings and 100-seed weight were evaluated in a completely randomized ...

The essential oils from leaves of Piper malacophyllum (Piperaceae) showed to be mainly composed by two alkenylphenol derivatives: gibbilimbols A and B. After isolation and structural characterization by NMR and MS data analysis, both compounds were evaluated against promastigote/amastigote forms of Leishmania (L.) infantum as well as trypomastigote/amastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi. The obtained results indicated that gibbilimbol B displayed potential against the tested parasites and low toxicity ...

Abstract Holm oak ( Quercus rotundifolia ) woodlands have been able to persist in fire-prone landscapes in northern Portugal where they seem to play a relevant role in community and landscape level patterns and processes, namely in the control of disturbance events and in the maintenance of biodiversity. In this research we tested the following hypotheses: (i) holm oak woodlands affect fire behavior, mainly by disrupting and delaying fire spread; (ii) disruption and delaying of fire spread is due to fire ...

The structure of the glycosomal glyceraldehyde‐3‐phosphate dehydrogenase (gGAPDH) from Trypanosoma cruzi complexed with chalepin, a natural product from Pilocarpus spicatus , has been determined by X‐ray crystallography to 1.95 Å resolution. The structure is in the apo form without cofactors in the subunits of the tetrameric gGAPDH in the asymmetric unit. Unequivocal density corresponding to the inhibitor was clearly identified in one monomer. The final refined model of the complex shows extensive ...

Today there are more than 2 billion alcohol users and about 1.3 billion tobacco users worldwide. The chronic and heavy use of these two substances is at the heart of numerous diseases and may wreak havoc on the human oral microbiome. Abstract We estimated comparative primary and booster vaccine effectiveness (VE) of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5 and BA.2 lineages against infection and disease progression. During April–June 2022, we implemented a case–case and cohort study and classified lineages using whole-genome sequencing or spike gene target failure. For the case–case study, we estimated the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of vaccination using a logistic regression. For the cohort study, we estimated VE against disease progression using ...

River floodplains and reservoirs interact throughout a basin drainage network, defining a coupled human-water system with multiple feedbacks. Recent modeling developments have aimed to improve the representation of such processes at regional to continental scales. Brazilian protected areas are essential for plant conservation in the Atlantic Forest domain, one of the 36 global biodiversity hotspots. A major challenge for improving conservation actions is to know the plant richness, protected by these areas. Online databases offer an accessible way to build plant species lists and to provide relevant information about biodiversity. A list of land plants of "Parque Nacional do Caparaó" (PNC) was previously built using online databases and published on the website " ...

The nearshore circulation in the lee of a cape under upwelling conditions was studied using in-situ data from 3 consecutive summers (2006–2008). Focus was given to a period between 20 July and 04 August 2006 to study the diurnal variability of the cross-shelf circulation. This period was chosen because it had a steady upwelling-favourable wind condition modulated by a diurnal cycle much similar to sea breeze. The daily variability of the observed cross-shelf circulation consisted of three distinct ...
