Recent studies have shown that persistent SARS-CoV-2 infections in immunocompromised patients can trigger the accumulation of an unusual high number of mutations with potential relevance at both biological and epidemiological levels. Here, we report a case of an immunocompromised patient (non-Hodgkin lymphoma patient under immunosuppressive therapy) with a persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection (marked by intermittent positivity) over at least 6 months. Viral genome sequencing was performed at days 1, 164, ...

Biological silage additives can assist in making silages by promoting a rapid reduction in silage pH and preventing aerobic deterioration. The current Lactobacillus buchneri on the market produces acetic acid slowly and identifying strains that would improve aerobic stability earlier in the ensiling process would be helpful. This study aimed to investigate the changes in microbial population, dry matter (DM) recovery and fermentation profile of maize silage with or without inoculation with L. buchneri ...

This work presents a methodology for obtaining self-doped titanium dioxide nanotubes (SD-TNT) and self-doped titanium dioxide nanotubes modified with Pt electrodeposition (SD-TNT/Pt) for electro-oxidation (EO) and photo-electro-oxidation (PEO) of Tetracycline Hydrochloride (TCH). The SD-TNT electrode was obtained by anodization of titanium foil and the Pt electrodeposition was performed by pulsed potentiometry. Uniform nanotubes distribution with diameters of ∼100 nm, wall thickness of ∼16 nm, and length ...

The balance between hope-hopelessness plays an important role in the way terminally ill patients report quality of life, and personal resilience may be related to hope at the end of life. The objective of this study was to explore associations between personal resilience, hope, and other possible predictors of hope in advanced cancer patients.A cross-sectional pilot study was carried out with metastatic colorectal cancer patients in a tertiary hospital. The patients answered the Connor-Davidson ...

This study compared the photosynthetic responses of two clones (RRIM600 and FX3864) of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis L.) subjected to drought stress. This stress was imposed by complete removal of watering until the leaf water potential (Ψw) reached critical values, which occurred at 38 days after water deficit (DAWD) for both rubber clones. One-year-old rubber plants were cultivated in 20 L pots filled with a soil:sand:humus ratio of 4:3:3. Photosynthetic performance was analyzed by measuring ...

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan infecting up to one-third of the world's population, constituting a life threat if transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy. In Portugal, there is a lack of knowledge of the current epidemiological situation, as the unique toxoplasmosis National Serological Survey was performed in 1979/1980.We studied the seroprevalence trends in the Portuguese general population over the past 3 decades, by assessing chronological spread cross-sectional ...

RT-PCR spike gene target late detection (SGTL) can constitute a useful surrogate to track B.1.1.7 spread, besides the spike gene target failure (SGTF) proxy. SGTL/SGTF samples were associated with statistically significant higher viral loads, but not with substantial shift in age distribution ...

Colorimetric techniques have been developed and used in routine analyses for over a century and apparently all their potentialities have been exhaustively explored. However, colorimetric techniques have gained high visibility in the last two decades mainly because of the development of the miniaturization concept, for example, paper-based analytical devices that mostly employ colorimetric reactions, and by the advances and popularity of image capture instruments. The impressive increase in the use ...

Meningoencephalitis is one of the most common disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) worldwide. Viral meningoencephalitis differs from bacterial meningitis in several aspects. In some developing countries, bacterial meningitis has appropriate clinical management and chemotherapy is available. Virus-associated and virus not detected meningoencephalitis are treatable, however, they may cause death in a few cases. The knowledge of how mediators of inflammation can induce disease would contribute ...

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are opportunistic human pathogens found in the environment. The transmission seems to be associated with inhalation of aerosol droplets, ingestion or trauma events. Recent studies indicate that NTM disease is increasing worldwide, however, the true clinical impact of NTM infections is difficult to determine due to challenges in discriminating between disease and colonization as they are ubiquitous in the environment. In addition, understanding the epidemiology of ...

The chemical investigation of the fruits of Cipadessa fruticosa (Meliaceae) afforded the new limonoid cipadesin B and the known swietemahonolide. From the roots of Cedrela fissilis (Meliaceae) were isolated the limonoid 3beta-acetoxycarapin, new as natural product, along with the triterpenes oleanolic and oleanonic acid. These compounds and other six mexicanolide limonoids previously isolated from C. fruticosa showed insecticidal activity against the leaf-cutting ants Atta sexdens rubropilosa.

Under salt stress conditions, plant growth is reduced due to osmotic, nutritional and oxidative imbalance. However, salicylic acid acts in the mitigation of this abiotic stress by promoting an increase in growth, photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, synthesis of osmoregulators and antioxidant enzymes.
