Auralization is a powerful tool to increase the realism and sense of immersion in Virtual Reality environments. The Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) filters commonly used for auralization are non-individualized, as obtaining individualized HRTFs poses very serious practical difficulties. It is therefore extremely important to understand to what extent this hinders sound perception. In this paper, we address this issue from a learning perspective. In a set of experiments, we observed that mere ...

The Internet of Things is progressively getting broader, evol-ving its scope while creating new markets and adding more to the existing ones. However, both generation and analysis of large amounts of data, which are integral to this concept, may require the proper protection and privacy-awareness of some sensitive information. In order to control the access to this data, allowing devices to verify the reliability of their own interactions with other endpoints of the network is a crucial step to ...

The use of windmills for the pumping of well water has appeared economically feasible in regions with average winds above 5 m/s, and when the water is used for human consumption and irrigation in arid rural zones, the importance of extracting the water from these wells efficiently and sustainably becomes more evident. However, concerning the state of Ceará/Brazil, only 18% of the drilled wells are freshwater wells, thus requiring additional energy for the utilization of desalination systems such ...

Abstract Objective: To test the hypothesis that short- and long-term celecoxib administration has no effect on orthodontic tooth movement. Materials and Methods: Male Wistar rats were submitted to short- (3 days) and long-term (14 days) celecoxib administration, while the respective control groups received equivolumetric saline intraperitoneal injections. The upper left first molars of all rats were moved mesially for 14 days by a fixed orthodontic appliance exerting 50 g force upon insertion. After ...

Intracellular pathogens have evolved mechanisms to ensure their survival and development inside their host cells. Here, we show that glucose is a pivotal modulator of hepatic infection by the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei and that glucose uptake via the GLUT1 transporter is specifically enhanced in P. berghei-infected cells. We further show that ATP levels of cells containing developing parasites are decreased, which is known to enhance membrane GLUT1 activity. In addition, GLUT1 molecules ...

Abstract Expression of PAX 2 (Paired‐box 2) is suppressed through promoter methylation at the later stages of embryonic development, but eventually reactivated during carcinogenesis. Pax‐2 is commonly expressed in the most prevalent renal cell tumour ( RCT ) subtypes—clear cell RCC (cc RCC ), papillary RCC ( pRCC ) and oncocytoma—but not in chromophobe RCC (chr RCC ), which frequently displays chromosome 10 loss (to which PAX 2 is mapped). Herein, we assessed the epigenetic and/or genetic alterations affecting PAX ...

Abstract Brain morphology varies across the ageing trajectory and the prediction of a person's age using brain features can aid the detection of abnormalities in the ageing process. Existing studies on such “brain age prediction” vary widely in terms of their methods and type of data, so at present the most accurate and generalisable methodological approach is unclear. Therefore, we used the UK Biobank data set ( N = 10,824, age range 47–73) to compare the performance of the machine learning models support ...

Obesity is a major concern for global health care systems. Systemic low-grade inflammation in obesity is a major risk factor for insulin resistance. Leptin is an adipokine secreted by the adipose tissue that functions by controlling food intake, leading to satiety. Leptin levels are increased in obesity.
