Upper Jurassic sedimentary rocks of Guará Formation record the environmental and geotectonic changes of the early break-up stages in the southwestern portion of Gondwana. Newly-described occurrences of this formation allow the expansion of its areal distribution to the central part of the Paraná Basin, Brazil. Four vertical sections are presently described in Paraná State, Brazil. Nineteen lithofacies were grouped in five facies associations, through the classical method of facies analysis. The ...

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an unusual cause of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Better recognition and diagnosis has raised awareness of this condition. However, the pathophysiology of SCAD and its prognosis are still little understood. We aimed to investigate the characteristics and prognosis of patients with SCAD, and subsequently performed a review of literature. Single-center, retrospective study performed in patients hospitalized from January 2010 to December 2016 with suspected ...

Abstract Background Resistance of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum to sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) has evolved worldwide. In the archipelago of São Tomé and Principe (STP), West Africa, although SP resistance is highly prevalent the drug is still in use in particular circumstances. To address the evolutionary origins of SP resistance in these islands, we genotyped point mutations at P. falciparum dhfr and dhps genes and analysed microsatellites flanking those genes. Methods Blood samples ...

The Lower Cretaceous São Sebastião Formation of Jatobá Basin consists of continental strata accumulated in an arid environment dominated by aeolian deposits. The best outcrops are located in the county of Ibimirim, in the Pernambuco State. Through the description of several stratigraphic sections, three aeolian and two fluvial facies associations characterize this formation. The aeolian facies represent (a) aeolian crescentic dunes, (b) aeolian sand sheets, and (c) blowouts; the fluvial facies record ( ...

ABSTRACT Recent studies have shown that distributive fluvial systems are the dominant fluvial forms in modern continental sedimentary basins, thus composing a large part of the stratigraphic record. This study provides a basin-scale architectural analysis of the Guará Formation, from the Upper Jurassic record of southwestern Gondwana, and attempts to compare the formation's depositional model to those developed for distributive fluvial system (DFS) successions. This time interval is significant because ...

The comparison between reconstructed paleocurrent data from eolian dune deposits and models for atmospheric circulation shows that a monsoonal circulation pattern operated in the low latitudes of Gondwana until the Hauterivian. Trade winds from the Northern Hemisphere crossed the Equator and were re-oriented to the south, shifting the Intertropical Convergence Zone to paleolatitudes around 25° S, where the convergence with westerlies winds occurred. The rupture of the monsoonal pattern and the establishment ...
