The psychometric characteristics of multiple-choice questions (MCQ) changed when taking into account their anatomical sites and the presence of item-writing flaws (IWF). The aim is to understand the impact of the anatomical sites and the presence of IWF in the psychometric qualities of the MCQ.800 Clinical Anatomy MCQ from eight examinations were classified as standard or flawed items and according to one of the eight anatomical sites. An item was classified as flawed if it violated at least one of ...

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the most commonly used yeast in wine, beer, and bread fermentations. However, Torulaspora delbrueckii has attracted interest in recent years due to its properties, ranging from its ability to produce flavor- and aroma-enhanced wine to its ability to survive longer in frozen dough. In this work, publicly available genomes of T. delbrueckii were explored and their annotation was improved. A total of 32 proteins were additionally annotated for the first time in the type ...

Since the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the pressure to minimise its impact on public health has led to the implementation of different therapeutic strategies, the efficacy of which for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was unknown at the time. Remdesivir (REM) was granted its first conditional marketing authorisation in the EU in June 2020. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and local health authorities all across the EU have since strongly ...

The wastewater generated in urban areas is one of the main sources of water pollution, particularly in regions characterized with large population density and high urbanization degree. In this paper, we present an optimization model for regional wastewater systems planning. The model is aimed at helping to determine the best possible configuration (layout of sewer networks, location of treatment plants, etc.) for the wastewater system of a region taking economic, environmental, and technical criteria ...

Low-velocity impact can cause serious damage to the person or structure that is hit. The development of barriers that can absorb the energy of the impact and, therefore, protect the other side of the impact is the ideal solution for the pointed situation. Auxetic materials and shear thickening fluids are two types of technologies that have great capabilities to absorb high levels of energy when an impact happens. Accordingly, within this study, the combination of auxetic knits with shear thickening ...

Teaching time dedicated to anatomy education has been reduced at many medical schools around the world, including Nova Medical School in Lisbon, Portugal. In order to minimize the effects of this reduction, the authors introduced two optional, semester-long cadaveric dissection courses for the first two years of the medical school curriculum. These courses were named Regional Anatomy I (RAI) and Regional Anatomy II (RAII). In RAI, students focus on dissecting the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and perineum. ...

The compliance of macroalgal and macroinvertebrate assemblages to anthropogenic disturbance gradients (e.g., nutrient enrichment) was investigated at intertidal rocky shores. Macroalgae and macroinvertebrates presented parallel behavior, both showing shifts in the communities’ structural variation along the gradients, in which an higher number of opportunistic species (and higher abundances) were found in more stressful sites (close to the disturbance source), in contrast to less disturbed sites (far ...

The implementation of directives such as the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) has promoted the development of several tools and methods for assessing the ecological health of marine ecosystems. Within the scope of the WFD and in terms of rocky shores, several multimetric tools were developed based on the macroalgae biological quality element (BQE), in addition to those based on macroinvertebrates. The WFD requires member states to assess each ...

The present study investigates the climatic influence on the geochemistry and mineralogy of the Lower Cretaceous succession of the Ericeira region (Lusitanian Basin, western Portugal). Palaeoclimatic conditions are inferred from a combination of weathering indices and independent palynological and palaeobotanical data. A composite weathering intensity index is computed from selected geochemical and mineralogical data. The concentrations of some elements (Co, Ni, Sc, Th, V, Y, Zn, Zr) indicate variable ...

Abstract The Water Framework Directive requires all Member States to achieve good ecological quality status for all waters (e.g., transitional waters). For that purpose, Member States must assess water bodies based on information on the Biological Quality Elements listed for each of them (e.g., benthic macroinvertebrates). However, the production of such a quality status classification (high, good, moderate, poor, bad) requires high reference conditions (associated with the absence of, or very low, ...

It has increasingly been recognized that electrical currents play a pivotal role in cell migration and tissue repair, in a process named "galvanotaxis". In this review, we summarize the current evidence supporting the potential benefits of electric stimulation (ES) in the physiology of peripheral nerve repair (PNR). Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and the second most deathly worldwide. It is a very heterogeneous disease that can develop via distinct pathways where metastasis is the primary cause of death. However, the high-dimensionality of gene expression data makes selecting novel metastatic biomarkers problematic. ...
